STORRS, Conn. — In the first-ever meeting between the schools, Stony Brook women's lacrosse dominated UConn, winning 16-5, led by an incredible performance by
Isabella Caporuscio and a lockdown defensive effort.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UConn drew first blood in the first quarter, scoring off a Stony Brook turnover with 10:51 remaining. The Huskies then continued to apply pressure on the Seawolf defense but were unable to convert, with
Ava Yancey stopping three straight chances. Stony Brook would later capitalize on a UConn turnover as
Reese Hjertaas scored to even things at 1-1 with 2:58 to go in the first. Just 57 seconds later,
Julia Fusco would convert on a free position opportunity, making it 2-1 in favor of the Seawolves heading into the second quarter.
Fusco continued to make her presence felt early in the second, scoring just nine seconds into play and giving Stony Brook a 3-1 lead. Each team would then score a goal over the next few minutes, as the Seawolves led 4-2 with 12:08 remaining in the first half. Caporuscio then proceeded to take over play, rattling off three consecutive goals in less than five minutes of game time and giving Stony Brook a 7-2 advantage on the scoreboard. This momentum, sparked by Caporuscio, would continue for the rest of the quarter, with three more goals from
Haydin Eisfeld,
Katie Walsh and Fusco, making it 10-2 in favor of the Seawolves at the half.
Stony Brook stayed hot coming out of the break with Caporuscio scoring another two goals in less than five minutes, giving the Seawolves a 12-2 lead at the 11:19 point of the third quarter. A little over three minutes later, Caporuscio would make it 13-2 with her sixth goal of the day. UConn notched its lone goal of the third quarter to close out the quarter's scoring, seeing Stony Brook lead 13-3 heading into the final quarter of play.
In the fourth quarter, Stony Brook would score the first three goals, courtesy of
Mirabella Altebrando, Walsh and
Isabella Monteleone, making it 16-3 with 5:20 left to play. The Huskies would tally two goals in the closing minutes, putting the final score at 16-5 in favor of the Seawolves.
STATS AND NOTES
- Caporuscio paced the Seawolf attack with six goals, tying a career-high. She also had five ground balls and a new career-best five caused turnovers.
- Walsh tallied three goals and an assist in the win.
- Fusco recorded four points via three goals and one assist.
- Allie Masera caused a new career-high four turnovers against the Huskies in addition to four ground balls, tying her career high.
- Mirabella Altebrando, Hjertaas and Eisfeld each scored a goal each in today's victory.
- Monteleone's goal was the first of her collegiate career.
- Olivia Schorr and Keira Martin both posted three assists on the day.
- Yancey made five saves and picked up her second straight win in goal.
- Stony Brook outshot UConn 40-14 on the day.
- The Seawolves' defense forced 19 UConn turnovers.
- On clear attempts, Stony Brook was a perfect 15-of-15 on the day.
