Seawolves Win Crucial Matchup With Drexel

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Entering the final five games of the regular season, the Seawolves got a massive win over Drexel on national TV Monday night as they defeated the Dragons 72-69 to move a game ahead of them in the standings and one step closer to securing a bye for the first two rounds of the CAA tournament.

Stony Brook has evened up the season series with Drexel at 1-1

How It Happened

  • Just like the first meeting between the two teams this year, it was a low-scoring affair early on as the Dragons slightly edged out the Seawolves 10-8 through the opening five minutes.  Drexel soon began to pull away, though, going on an 8-0 run to go up 18-8 by the 12-minute mark.
  • Halfway through the period Erik Pratt would get the Seawolves back within six after knocking down the team's first three-pointer of the night. He would immediately follow up with a short-range jumper to cut the deficit down to 20-16 with nine and a half to play. However, a 7-0 Dragons run over the next minute would grow their lead to 11
  • Three-pointers from Richard Goods and Rob Brown III would cut Drexel's lead down to 27-24 with under six minutes to play. A layup from Andrej Shoshkikj would make it a one-point game, before a pair of free throws from Pratt made it 12 unanswered and gave the Seawolves their first lead of the day at 28-27 with four minutes remaining.
  • The lead would change multiple times over the final three minutes, with triples from Ethan Simmon and Brown twice shifting things back in Stony Brook's favor. With 30 seconds left, Simmon gave the Seawolves their largest lead yet at 36-32, only for the Dragons to hit one last three to make it 36-35 at the end of the half.
  • The Seawolves opened the second half with a 7-0 run to quickly go up 43-35 just under three minutes in. It did not take long for Drexel to go on an extended run of its own and by 14:24 eventually tie the game at 45-45.
  • The score would end up tied four more times over the next 10 minutes as both teams went back-and-forth, eventually ending up deadlocked at 58-58 with five minutes remaining. During this run Erik Pratt picked up another six points while Shoshkikj added five.
  • A two-minute Stony Brook scoring drought allowed Drexel to retake the lead at 62-58 with under four to play. Goods finally ended the skid to get the team back within two, before Shoshkikj knocked down another three to put the Seawolves back in front 63-62 at 3:13.
  • Back-to-back buckets for the Dragons once again gave them back the lead, carrying a 67-63 advantage with a little over a minute left. Goods then made two at the line to make it a two-point game, setting up Simmon for the go-ahead triple with 50 seconds on the clock. Though Drexel would go up by one just seven seconds later, a layup from Pratt put the Seawolves back in front for good with 30 seconds left. From there, two final free throws from Shoshkikj and a costly Drexel turnover sealed the victory.

Stats and Notes

  • Pratt recorded his 12th 20-point game after leading the way with 21 today. He also led the team with eight rebounds and five assists.
  • Goods finished with 17 points for his ninth game in double figures, while Shoshkikj had 14 for his 13th double-digit scoring game.
  • At 8-6, Stony Brook has its best start in CAA play through 14 games since joining the conference in 2022-23.
  • Stony Brook forced 17 turnovers today, the third most this year and the most in CAA play.
