STONY BROOK, N.Y. - In their penultimate home game of the season, the Seawolves picked up win number 12 at Stony Brook Arena this year as they defeated Hampton 79-72. This marks the third time in the last 10 years that Stony Brook has won at least 12 home games.
Just like on Monday vs. Drexel, the Seawolves have evened up the season series with the Pirates at one win each.
How It Happened
- Both teams were dead even through the opening five minutes as they sat at 10-10. Richard Goods and Quin Gorman got things started with a bucket and a defensive board each, before Erik Pratt contributed the go-ahead three-pointer at 15:49, followed by the game-tying jumper at 15:13.
- After the Pirates retook the lead, dunks from Goods and Pratt, followed by Erik's second triple of the afternoon, put the Seawolves back on top 17-15 with 11 to play. Meanwhile, back-to-back blocks by Oleg Kojenets and Tomas Valentiny helped keep Hampton off the board.
- Following a three-minute scoring drought for both teams, Stony Brook entered the final five minutes up 25-22 thanks to the first five points of the day from Rob Brown III. With three minutes left, though, the Pirates managed to tie it back up at 25 all.Â
- Hampton briefly went in front 29-27 with a little over a minute remaining. Pratt and Ethan Simmon, though, proceeded to knock down back-to-back threes, before Jonah Butler capped things off with one last block to secure a 33-29 lead at the end of the half.
- After a quiet first half, Andrej Shoshkikj quickly got on the board in the second with his first triple. Five minutes in and the lead grew to 48-36 as Pratt made two more jumpers to give him 20 points on the day.
- Led by Pratt and Goods, the Seawolves offense did not let up as their scoring run soon reached 13 points in a row to extend the lead to 53-36 with under 13 to play.
- Hampton's scoring woes continued as the Pirates were held without a field goal for over five minutes, allowing Stony Brook to maintain its 17-point lead at 57-40 with under 10 minutes to go.
- By the seven-minute mark, Hampton soon found itself back within eight as a 9-0 run had cut the Seawolves' lead down to 57-49. Shoshkikj finally broke the run with a layup at 6:57 to get the lead back into double digits. The Pirates offense did not slow, however, as a they had cut the lead down to just four a minute later.
- With Stony Brook holding on to a five-point lead with only for minutes left, Shoshkikj came up with his biggest basket of the afternoon as he came up with the steal at half court and took it in for the layup to make it 62-55.Â
- Another extended Hampton scoring drought allowed the Seawolves to regrow the lead to 10 as they carried a 69-59 lead into the final two minutes. The Pirates did not have another late comeback in them as the cushion proved to be enough for Stony Brook.
Stats and Notes
- Pratt reached double figures just nine minutes into the game as he finished with a team-high 34. This gives him three games this season with 30+ points and 25 double-digit scoring games overall. He also tied his season high with four three-pointers, shooting a perfect 100% for the day.
- Entering the day five points away from 500, Pratt ends the night with 529 points on the year.
- Facing his old team, Goods had his 10th double-digit scoring game with 15 today. He also led the team with seven rebounds.
- Shoshkikj totaled 14 points to give him 14 games this year in double figures.
- The Seawolves totaled five blocks in the first half today, ultimately ending with seven on the afternoon. This is tied for the team's second highest total by the team this year. Kojenets, Butler, and Gorman all had two blocks each.
