Baseball Edged in Extra Innings at Georgia Tech

2/21/2026 6:18:00 PM

Box Score ATLANTA, Ga. - The Stony Brook baseball team led by as many as three runs in the fourth inning this afternoon before No. 2 Georgia Tech rallied to defeat the Seawolves, 6-5, on a ground ball that caromed off the third-base bag with two outs in the 10th inning.
  HOW IT HAPPENED
  • James Schaffer again started the game with a single in the opening inning. After a sac bunt by Nick Zampieron, Georgia Tech recorded a pop out and a ground out to end the threat. The Yellow Jackets got on the scoreboard first with a leadoff homer and an RBI single that gave them an early 2-0 advantage.
  • Stony Brook stormed right back and took a 3-2 lead in the top of the second. After a Matthew Jackson double, Chris Carson brought him in with a double of his own. Scott Gell later drove in Carson on a sac bunt, and Schaffer doubled down the line to put the Seawolves ahead.
  • Matthew Canizares settled in for the Seawolves in the second inning, stranding runners on the corners with a fly out to Zampieron.
  • After the Seawolves were held scoreless in the third, Canizares again worked out of trouble by recording a pop out and a foul out with the bases loaded to keep Stony Brook ahead through three innings of play.
  • The Seawolves took a 5-2 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single up the middle from Scott Gell. Dylan Henshaw came into the bottom half of the frame and tossed a 1-2-3 inning. After the Seawolves went down in order in the top of the fifth, the freshman came back out and delivered another 1-2-3 inning to end the frame.
  • Carson sparked the Seawolves in the top of the sixth by drawing a walk and stealing second base. He advanced to third on an error but was caught trying to score. The Yellow Jackets cut the deficit to 5-4 in the bottom half, but Henshaw escaped the inning with the bases loaded following a pop out.
  • Following a 1-2-3 inning from Stony Brook in the top of the seventh, Georgia Tech launched a solo shot to tie the game at 5-5. John Rizzo entered the game for the Seawolves and stranded a runner at third to keep the game tied heading into the eighth.
  • Rizzo was dealing over the next two innings, retiring six of the seven batters he faced to send the game to extra innings.
  • Schaffer drew a one-out walk in the 10th inning before the Yellow Jackets turned a double play to conclude the inning.
  • Georgia Tech came up with back-to-back two out hits before a ball of the third base bag in the final inning gave the Yellow Jackets the 6-5 victory.
