Martin Earns First Career Win as Worley Fans 11 in Baseball Victory at FIU

MIAMI, Fla. -- Micah Worley had everything working on Friday, fanning 11 Florida International hitters over six innings of work to help propel the Stony Brook Seawolves over the Panthers 11-1 for the their first win of the season and the first victory of the Jim Martin era.

Offensively, the Seawolves were powered by production throughout the lineup. At the top, James Schaffer tallied two hits, scored two runs and drove in two RBI, while Nicholas Dromboski added a single, two runs scored and two RBI for Stony Brook. Matthew Jackson posted a team-high three RBI on two hits, including a double, while Nick Zampieron led the team with three hits and scored twice in the victory. Johnny Pilla also crossed the plate three times, and Aidyn Coffey added an RBI knock.

Micah Worley delivered a career night for the Seawolves, striking out a career-best 11 batters over 6.0 shutout innings. He allowed just two hits — a single in the first and another in the sixth — while throwing 83 pitches and issuing one walk in the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Nicholas Dromboski reached on an error with one out and moved to third on a single from Johnny Pilla to left-center. Chanz Doughty gave the Seawolves an early lead with a groundout to second.
  • Worley retired the first two batters he faced, including one by strikeout. After surrendering a two-out single, he recorded another strikeout to end the inning.
  • The Seawolves went to work with two outs in the top of the second. Zampieron started the rally with a double, and Scott Gell wore a pitch to put runners on first and second. Schaffer brought home Zampieron with a single, and Dromboski followed with a base hit to score Schaffer and Gell. Jackson extended the lead to 6-0 with a single through the left side that plated Pilla and Dromboski.
  • Worley continued to deal in the bottom of the second, striking out two and maintaining the 6-0 advantage.
  • The Seawolves struck again with two outs in the third, as Schaffer drove in Zampieron with a single after the centerfielder opened the inning with a knock. Worley added two more strikeouts in the bottom half, stranding a runner at first to keep Stony Brook ahead 7-0.
  • With two outs in the fourth, Stony Brook added to its lead with RBI singles from Coffey and Zampieron to make it 9-0. Worley worked around trouble in the bottom half after hitting two batters with one out but responded by striking out the next two to keep FIU off the board.
  • The final two-out rally began with Pilla drawing a walk. He later scored on a wild pitch, and Matthew Jackson drove in another run with a double to left field.
  • With an 11-0 cushion, Worley continued to cruise. He tossed a 1-2-3 fifth inning with a strikeout and later stranded a runner at third after a leadoff double, striking out two in the frame. Luca Mannino closed out the game, allowing just one run in the seventh on a ground ball to secure the 11-1 victory for Stony Brook.
