STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The Stony Brook baseball team fell this afternoon to Siena Saints 14-8 in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday afternoon at Joe Nathan Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Evan Kay made the start for Stony Brook this afternoon. After recording a pick-off in the first inning, Siena used three straight singles followed by a sac-fly to take a 1-0 lead. However, Kay recorded a strikeout to leave the bases loaded.
- Stony Brook responded in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 1-1. Matthew Jackson walked and stole second before Johnny Pilla doubled to right field to even the score.
- Siena scored seven runs on five hits and an error by Stony Brook in the top of the second to take an 8-1 advantage.
- Stony Brook cut the deficit to 8-2 in the following half inning. Aidyn Coffey brought home James Shaffer on a rope down the left field line.
- Conner Willar gave the Seawolves their first scoreless inning on the mound in the third, stranding two runners to finish the inning of work.
- James Schaffer cut the Saints' lead to 8-5 in the bottom half of the third by bringing in Carson and Jackson on his first career home run.
- Luca Mannino entered the game for the Seawolves in the top of the fourth and threw a 1-2-3 inning. With two outs in the next half inning, Jackson made the score 8-6 with a sac-fly that brought in Scheri.
- Siena extended its lead in the top of the fifth with a lead-off homer and later an RBI single to make the score 10-6. The Seawolves were held scoreless in their half and faced a four-run deficit heading into the sixth inning.
- Schaffer saved the Seawolves two runs in the top of the sixth with a diving catch at third base to maintain the four-run deficit. In their next half at the plate, the Seawolves loaded the bases with two outs after a walk and a single set the stage for Pilla. However, the Saints recorded a fly-out to end the inning and the threat.
- Siena took advantage of a lead-off walk to start the seventh and later recorded a two-out double and a two-run homer to take a 13-6 lead. The Seawolves got two runners on to start the bottom half of the seventh but were held scoreless in the frame.
- Kincaid Bergthold bounced back in the eighth inning on the mound, tossing a scoreless inning of work.
- The Seawolves scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to cut the Siena lead to 13-8 after a homer by Jackson in the right field corner.
- After a run by Siena in the ninth to make the score 14-8, the road team held on in the final inning to secure the victory on Tuesday afternoon.
