MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. — The Stony Brook baseball team got the weekend series started with a win on Friday as the Seawolves defeated Charleston 3-1 in the conference tilt.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Seawolves got on the board early in the first when Chris Carson doubled to left and allowed Johnny Pilla to go first to third before coming home on an error by the left fielder.
- Micah Worley got to work in the bottom of the inning and fired his first of five-straight scoreless frames, striking out back-to-back batters to begin his night en route to 10 total punch outs on the night.
- Worley proceeded to retire the side in order in each of the next three innings after allowing just one hit in the first.
- With two outs in the fifth, the Seawolves would threaten to add to their lead following a single from Nicholas Dromboski and a walk to Matthew Jackson, but the Cougars managed to escape the inning unscathed.
- Stony Brook would come right back in the top of the sixth and again get the first two men aboard. Carson led off the inning with his third hit of the day and advanced to second on James Schaffer's walk. Mike Villani singled through the right side to bring home Carson, before coming around to score himself three batters later on a single from Luke Szepek to make it 3-0.
- The Cougars would get get on the board for the first time in the bottom of the sixth on a sac fly. Dylan Henshaw, who came in to relieve Worley, successfully limited them to just the single run after punching out the final batter of the inning.
- Following two more scoreless frames from Henshaw, John Rizzo was brought in to close out the game. He would need just 10 pitches to finish off the Cougars in the bottom of the ninth, earning his first career save.
