PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Stony Brook women's lacrosse picked up its third consecutive win on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Villanova 18-10 in Philadelphia.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Seawolves got things going early, with a goal from
Haydin Eisfeld to open the scoring. Stony Brook doubled its lead to 2-0 34 seconds later, off an
Alexa Constant caused turnover, helping set up a quick goal in transition by
Keira Martin. The Wildcats notched their lone goal of the first quarter less than a minute later, as the Seawolves led 2-1 with 9:58 left to go in the quarter. Stony Brook ended the quarter in a similar fashion to how it started, with two goals this time, via a pair of free-position goals from
Mirabella Altebrando and
Olivia Schorr, extending the lead to 4-1.
Villanova scored 14 seconds into the second quarter, cutting the lead to two goals again. The Seawolves quickly responded with three goals in 1:57 of play, highlighted by two consecutive scores from
Isabella Caporuscio, giving Stony Brook a five-goal lead. This run continued over the next few minutes with the Seawolves tacking on another two goals, now leading 9-2 with 5:37 remaining in the first half. The Wildcats were able to cut into the lead a bit by scoring the next two goals. Turning defense into offense, Stony Brook scored the final goal of the first half, which started with a Caporuscio caused turnover and finished with Eisfeld's third goal of the game.
Each side generated offense early in the third quarter, scoring two goals apiece, with the Seawolves now leading 12-6 with 10:20 remaining in the quarter. Both teams were held in check for the next five minutes, until
Katie Walsh broke through the Villanova defense to score and give Stony Brook a 13-6 advantage. The Wildcats notched the final goal of the quarter, now trailing by six heading into the fourth and final quarter.
The Seawolves put the game out of reach for good in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, tallying two goals in the first five minutes, and extending their lead to 15-7. Villanova and Stony Brook each scored three goals to close out the game, as the Seawolves won by a final score of 18-10.
