WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Stony Brook baseball team opened its weekend with a 10-2 loss to Monmouth in the first of three meetings down the Shore.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Worley made the start for the Seawolves this afternoon. The left-hander allowed an unearned run in the first inning but induced a double play and recorded a strikeout to end the frame.
- Chris Carson tallied the first hit of the game in the top of the second for Stony Brook and advanced to third following a wild pitch and a fielding error by the center fielder on a Villani swing. However, the Hawks cut him down at the plate and later ended the inning's threat.
- The Seawolves' left-hander worked out of trouble in the third, striking out the side with a runner on third.
- After Stony Brook was held scoreless in the top of the third, Worley struck out two in the bottom half before the Hawks extended their lead to 2-0.
- Mike Villani recorded a hit and Aidyn Coffey drew a walk to put two on in the fourth, but Monmouth kept Stony Brook off the board.
- Following a leadoff home run in the bottom of the fourth, the Hawks added three unearned runs on a bases-clearing triple to take a 7-0 lead.
- Monmouth went up 8-0 in the fifth before Stony Brook responded with two runs in the sixth. Carson sparked the one-out rally with a double and scored on a Villani double. With two outs, Jack Scheri singled to center to bring in Villani and cut the deficit to 8-2.
- Conner Williar entered out of the bullpen in the sixth and tossed a 1-2-3 inning.
- Monmouth added a run in both the seventh and eighth innings to secure the 10-2 win in the series opener.
STATS AND NOTES
- Carson and Villani led the way offensively with multi-hit games. It marked the third time this season Carson has recorded multiple hits and the second time for Villani.
- With six strikeouts this afternoon, Worley now leads the CAA with 50 on the season.
- The Seawolves committed a season-high six errors.
- Stony Brook tied its season best with five stolen bases in the loss.
- Stony Brook is now 9-4 all-time against Monmouth.
