STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- The Stony Brook Seawolves rallied for three ninth‑inning runs, highlighted by a two‑run single from Luke Ciminiello and capped by a walk‑off wild pitch, to secure a 12–11 win over the Siena Saints on Tuesday.
Aidan Colagrande (2-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Stony Brook (5-16). The southpaw went 1.1 shutout innings without giving up a hit, allowing no walks and striking out two. Luca Mannino also made an impact on the mound for the Seawolves, throwing two scoreless innings while allowing no hits.
In the batter's box, the Seawolves were paced by Mike Villani, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a double, a walk and an RBI. Chanz Doughty furnished a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Jack Scheri also helped out for Stony Brook, putting together one hit in five trips to the plate while adding three RBIs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Ty Panariello got the start for the Seawolves and allowed a leadoff single before Paul Dulanto threw out a runner attempting to steal in his first career start behind the plate. The Saints answered with a two-out double and RBI single, then used an infield single and back-to-back walks to build a 4–0 lead, prompting Reilly Bridges to enter. Siena added two more to take a 6–0 advantage.
- The Seawolves loaded the bases with consecutive walks from Chris Carson, Nick Zamperion, and Mike Villani in the bottom of the first. Chanze Doughty drove in two with a single to make it 6–2, then Villani scored on a wild pitch and Jack Scheri brought home Pilla to cut it to 6–4.
- Siena pushed the lead to 7–4 on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch in the second, but Bridges limited the damage with a strikeout to strand the bases loaded. The Seawolves later put runners on second and third but couldn't capitalize.
- The Seawolves turned a 6-4-3 double play behind Luca Mannino in the third. Pilla later scored on a Jackson single to bring Stony Brook within two at 7–5.
- Mannino worked a clean fourth, and Stony Brook threatened with two-out hits from Doughty and Pilla before a flyout ended the inning.
- Matthew Canizares entered in the fifth with Scott Gell behind the plate and helped turn a strikeout-throwout double play after a one-out walk. Stony Brook left a runner on third, keeping it 7–5.
- Siena added a run in the sixth on a two-out single to left to make it 8–5. Doughty and Villani drew walks in the bottom half, and Scheri delivered a two-out, two-run single to cut the deficit to 8–7.
- Dylan Henshaw entered in the seventh, and Siena scored three runs to extend the lead to 11–7.
- Stony Brook responded as two batters reached on an error and hit-by-pitch, and another error made it 11–8. Villani followed with an RBI single to right to bring in Carson and cut it to 11–9.
- Aidan Colagrande entered in the eighth with two outs and runners on the corners and induced a groundout to escape the jam. He returned for the ninth after Stony Brook was held scoreless in the bottom of the eighth. He threw a scoreless inning, striking out two batters in the inning.
- Villani led the ninth inning off with a double and the Seawolves would later load the bases with no outs. Ciminiello came off the bench with the clutch two-RBI single that tied the game at 11-11. After Jackson followed with a hit-by-pitch, Pilla scored on a wild-pitch to give Stony Brook the 12-11 victory.
