STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Stony Brook left-hander Micah Worley had everything working on Friday, fanning eight Towson hitters over six innings of work to help power the Seawolves past the Tigers 3-1 at Joe Nathan Field.
In addition to his eight strikeouts, Worley (3-3) threw six innings, giving up one run on two hits and walking two for Stony Brook (6-16, 4-6). John Rizzo and Aidan Colagrande also made an impact on the mound for the Seawolves, finishing the final seven outs of the game as Rizzo earned his second save of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Worley made the start for the Seawolves this afternoon. The left-hander allowed a leadoff triple that later came around to score on a ground ball, giving Towson an early 1-0 lead. He settled in quickly, though, getting a groundout and a strikeout to close out the top of the first. Stony Brook put two runners on with two outs after back-to-back walks, but Towson escaped with a strikeout to end the inning.
- The left-hander came back out in the second and retired all three hitters, highlighted by a pickoff and a strikeout to keep things under control.
- After a leadoff walk in the third, Worley stayed composed, recording two strikeouts and a flyout to finish off another clean frame.
- Chris Carson picked up the Seawolves' first hit with one out in the bottom of the third and moved to third on a line drive down the right field line by Nick Zampieron. Mike Villani then came through with a clutch double down the line, bringing both runners home and giving Stony Brook a 2-1 lead through three innings.
- Worley kept it rolling in the fourth, tossing a 1-2-3 inning with a pair of strikeouts. Scott Gell added a single in the bottom half, but the Seawolves couldn't add on.
- Towson threatened in the fifth, starting with a leadoff walk and putting two on after an error. A passed ball moved both runners into scoring position with no outs, but Worley worked out of it. He picked up a strikeout for the first out, then got help from Carson on a play at the plate before inducing a ground ball to Villani to escape with the Seawolves still in front, 2-1.
- After a quiet bottom of the fifth, Worley returned for the sixth and delivered another 1-2-3 inning, recording his eighth strikeout to cap off a strong outing.
- Christian Martinez took over in the seventh, as Worley finished with eight strikeouts, allowing just one run on two hits across six innings of work. Martinez worked around some trouble, stranding two runners with a groundout back to the mound to end the inning.
- Gell sparked the offense again in the bottom of the seventh with a double down the right field line and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from James Schaffer. Carson followed with a sacrifice fly to right, bringing Gell home and extending the Seawolves' lead to 3-1 after seven.
- Aidan Colagrande came on in relief in the eighth and worked through a bit of traffic after allowing a single and a walk. He stayed composed and got a key double play on a fly ball to Doughty to end the inning, keeping Stony Brook in front, 3-1.
- Following a scoreless inning for the Seawolves in the bottom of the eighth, John Rizzo entered the game for the Seawolves. The right-hander sat down the Tigers in order to secure the 3-1 victory.
