Late Surge Lifts Towson Past Baseball

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Stony Brook baseball team battled back from an early deficit but couldn't hold off Towson late, falling 10-5 after the Tigers broke the game open with a four-run seventh inning this afternoon at Joe Nathan Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Right-hander Hunter Colagrande got the start for the Seawolves this afternoon. The sophomore surrendered a two-out single but got out of the opening half-inning with a groundout to shortstop. The Seawolves went down in order in their first trip to the plate.
  • Colagrande continued to dominate in the second inning, tossing a 1-2-3 frame and striking out the final batter.
  • After the Seawolves were held scoreless in the bottom of the second, Colagrande stranded a runner on second base—who reached on an error—with a grounder to short to keep the game scoreless.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the third, James Schaffer ripped a double down the left field line for Stony Brook's first hit of the day. A few batters later, Nick Zampieron brought Schaffer home on a single to right, giving the Seawolves a 1-0 lead.
  • In the top of the fourth, Towson tied the game with a double to left field that brought a runner home, then took a 2-1 lead on a steal of home. They added another run on a single to left to make it 3-1.
  • Doughty started the bottom of the fourth with a walk, and Jack Scheri moved him to second with a one-out single to put two runners on. Gell later recorded an infield single to load the bases with two outs before James Schaffer tied the game at 3-3 with a single to right that scored Doughty and Scheri.
  • Colagrande came back out for the top of the fifth and stranded a runner at third to end the frame and keep the game tied.
  • Stony Brook took the lead in the bottom of the fifth after Villani drew a walk, stole second, and was brought home on a single by Chanz Doughty to make it 4-3.
  • Towson responded in the top of the sixth, tying the game at 4-4 with an RBI single that knocked Colagrande out of the game and brought Dylan Henshaw in from the bullpen. The Tigers then loaded the bases with two consecutive walks, prompting Ty Panariello to enter. Panariello struck out the first batter he faced and induced a flyout to end the threat.
  • The Seawolves went down in order in the bottom of the sixth, and Towson scored four runs in the top of the seventh to take an 8-4 lead.
  • Matthew Canizares came out of the bullpen for Stony Brook in the top of the eighth and stranded the bases loaded to keep the deficit at four. The Seawolves were again held scoreless in the eighth, with Gell left on base after a two-out single.
  • In the top of the ninth inning, Towson went on to score two runs on one hit and one error to take a 10-4 lead.
  • Chris Carson led the ninth off with a single, Zamperion walked and Villani singled to load the bases  with no outs in the bottom of the ninth. Doughty brought in Carson on a double play that made the score 10-5. However, Towson held on to secure the five-run victory in their second of three games this weekend.
