STONY BROOK, N.Y. – A back-and-forth contest came down to the final innings, but Towson broke a tie in the eighth and held off Stony Brook's late rally to hand the Seawolves a narrow 4-3 loss on Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Nicholas Rizzo got the start for the Seawolves this afternoon. The left-hander worked out of trouble early, stranding a runner at second with a flyout to center to end the opening half-inning. Stony Brook was retired in order in its first trip to the plate.
- The Tigers drew three walks in the top of the second before a one-out sacrifice fly gave the road team an early 1-0 advantage. Nick Zamperion made a diving play in center to end the threat.
- The Seawolves responded with a leadoff hit-by-pitch from Chanz Doughty, who later stole second with one out. Johnny Pilla was also hit by a pitch, putting two runners on with two outs for Aidyn Coffey. Coffey delivered an RBI single, and Pilla came around to steal home during the next at-bat, giving Stony Brook a 2-1 lead.
- Luke Szepek threw out a runner attempting to steal second to close out the top of the third inning.
- After the Seawolves were held scoreless in the bottom of the third, Towson opened the fourth with a leadoff double followed by a sacrifice bunt, moving a runner to third with one out. The Tigers tied the game at 2-2 with an RBI single to right, but Rizzo induced a 1-6-3 double play to end the inning with the score even.
- Nicholas Dromboski recorded a two-out single in the bottom of the fourth, marking Stony Brook's second hit of the afternoon. Luke Szepek followed with a double to right field, allowing Dromboski to score and giving the Seawolves a 3-2 lead.
- Rizzo settled in during the next frame, tossing a 1-2-3 fifth inning. The Seawolves were also held scoreless in the bottom half, maintaining their one-run advantage through five.
- The left-hander struck out the first batter of the sixth before being lifted for Evan Kay out of the bullpen. Rizzo allowed two runs on three hits over 5.1 innings, exiting with the lead. The Tigers quickly capitalized, hitting a solo home run to tie the game at 3-3.
- The Seawolves put runners on first and second with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, but Towson escaped with a strikeout to end the inning.
- Towson opened the seventh with a leadoff double to the center field fence, prompting Aidan Colagrande to enter in relief of Kay. A hit-by-pitch and a Stony Brook error moved the runners to second and third with no outs. Colagrande responded with a strikeout and a popout to third for the first two outs. An intentional walk loaded the bases, but he induced a groundout to second to keep the game tied at 3-3.
- Carson came through with a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh for the Seawolves but was left stranded to end the inning.
- The Tigers regained the lead in the top of the eighth with an RBI double, taking a 4-3 advantage and prompting John Rizzo to enter the game. The right-hander stranded runners on second and third with one out, keeping it a one-run deficit.
- After a scoreless bottom of the eighth for Stony Brook, Rizzo returned for the ninth and tossed a 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout.
- Matthew Jackson drew a pinch-hit walk with one out in the ninth to spark a late rally for the Seawolves, but the Tigers held firm to secure a 4-3 victory over Stony Brook.
