Jackson’s Walk-Off Homer Lifts Seawolves to Victory Over Northeastern

STONY BROOK, N.Y.  — Matthew Jackson was the hero Sunday afternoon as the junior launched two home runs, including a walk-off shot in the ninth inning, to give the Seawolves a 7-6 victory at Joe Nathan Field.

Offensively, the Seawolves were led by Jackson, who blasted his first and second home runs of the season and drove in three runs. He also reached base via a walk and a hit-by-pitch. Scott Gell added a home run in a multi-hit performance, while Johnny Pilla and Nicholas Dromboski each recorded a double and an RBI.

Matthew Canizares made the start for the Seawolves, allowing no earned runs while striking out five batters over a season-high 4.0 innings. Christian Martinez came out of the bullpen and allowed one run over 2.0 innings. Aidan Colagrande earned the victory by recording the final out in the top of the ninth in a left-on-left matchup.

The win marks the first victory at Joe Nathan Field under head coach Jim Martin and Stony Brook's first win over the Huskies in their last nine meetings dating back to 2023.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After Northeastern tallied a run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead, Matthew Jackson stepped to the plate in the second and launched his first home run of the season down the right-field line to even the game at 1-1.
  • After allowing a one-out double in the top half of the second, Canizares struck out the next two batters to keep the game tied.
  • Following a scoreless inning for the Seawolves in the bottom of the second, Canizares again stranded a runner at second base with a fly out to center field.
  • The Seawolves went to work in the bottom of the third with a two-out rally to take the lead. Jackson started it after being hit by a pitch and later scored on a double down the right-field line by Johnny Pilla.
  • Canizares continued to deal in the top of the fourth, retiring the Huskies in order. The Seawolves, however, went scoreless in the bottom half, keeping the score 2-1 through four innings.
  • After the Stony Brook right-hander allowed a leadoff single in the fifth, left-hander Nicholas Rizzo entered out of the bullpen. Rizzo struck out the first two Northeastern batters he faced before inducing an infield pop-up to keep the Huskies off the board.
  • Stony Brook carried that momentum into the bottom of the fifth and extended its lead. Gell led off the inning with a double down the line and moved to third on a bunt single by Aidyn Coffey. Dromboski then brought Gell home with a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher, putting the Seawolves ahead 3-1.
  • Northeastern responded with a solo home run over the left-field fence in the sixth to cut the deficit to 3-2.
  • The Seawolves were held scoreless in the bottom half of the inning. In the seventh, the Huskies started with a leadoff single and later placed two runners on with two outs before tying the game with a single to right field. Northeastern then took a 5-3 lead with a double down the left-field line, prompting the Seawolves to turn to Christian Martinez out of the bullpen. The right-hander stranded the runner at second to end the inning.
  • Gell answered in the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff solo home run to left field, cutting the deficit to 5-4. Coffey followed with a hit-by-pitch and later moved to third on a double from Dromboski. Jackson tied the game at 5-5 with a groundout that brought Coffey home. Carson then gave the Seawolves the lead with a sacrifice fly that scored Dromboski, making it 6-5.
  • Martinez worked around a leadoff walk in the eighth, stranding the runner at second base with a fly out to left field to end the threat.
  • Northeastern rallied in the ninth, recording an infield single and a walk to put two runners on with one out. A single to right field tied the game, but Jackson threw out the trailing runner at second base for the second out of the inning. Colagrande entered and recorded the final out to send the game to the bottom of the ninth tied.
  • With two outs in the ninth inning, Jackson stepped to the plate and launched his second home run of the day to give the Seawolves a 7-6 walk-off victory in the finale of the three-game series.
