Seawolves Outlast Hofstra in Extra-Inning Thriller; Secures Weekend Series Victory

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Stony Brook defeated Hofstra 12-11 in 10 innings on Sunday, as Nicholas Dromboski delivered key late RBI and Matthew Canizares closed the door in the final frame to secure the series victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Seawolves got a two-out walk from Chanz Doughty in the bottom of the first inning and moved to third on a single from Chris Carson. Scott Gell brought both runners home with a three-run shot to give Stony Brook an early 3-0 lead.
  • Left-hander Nicholas Rizzo got the start for the Seawolves, but Hofstra applied pressure right away. Rizzo issued three straight walks to open the game before Christian Martinez came on in relief. The Pride took advantage, scoring four runs on two hits to grab a 4-3 lead after one inning.
  • After Stony Brook went down in order in the second, Martinez settled in with a clean inning of his own, recording a strikeout.
  • Hofstra opened the third with a double, prompting John Rizzo to come out of the bullpen. An infield single followed, and the Pride extended their lead to 5-3 on a sacrifice fly to left.
  • Stony Brook was held scoreless in the fourth, but Rizzo responded with a strong inning, striking out two as he set Hofstra down in order to keep the deficit at two.
  • Mike Cervoni drew a walk to start the fifth and moved to third on an infield single by James Schaffer. After Schaffer advanced to second with two outs, Doughty worked another walk to load the bases. Carson delivered in a big spot, clearing the bases with a double to put Stony Brook back in front, 6-5. Jack Scheri followed with an RBI single to make it 7-5.
  • Hofstra answered in the bottom half, cutting the lead to 7-6 heading into the sixth.
  • The Seawolves offense was quiet in the top of the sixth, and the Pride took advantage again, scoring twice on two-out RBI singles to move ahead 8-7.
  • Stony Brook responded right away in the seventh. Doughty drove in Nick Zampieron with a single through the left side, and Carson followed with another RBI single to give the Seawolves a 9-8 lead. Hofstra answered again, tying the game at 9-9 with a home run in the bottom half.
  • With two outs in the eighth, Schaffer walked and Zampieron doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Dromboski came through with a clutch two-run single up the middle, giving Stony Brook an 11-9 advantage.
  • Hofstra rallied in the ninth. After two quick outs, the Pride hit a solo home run and later added an RBI double to tie the game at 11-11 and force extra innings.
  • In the 10th, Cervoni led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Schaffer. Zampieron followed with a single to put runners on the corners, and Dromboski delivered again with an RBI infield single to give the Seawolves a 12-11 lead.
  • Matthew Canizares took the mound in the bottom of the 10th and worked through a tense inning after three straight hit batters to start the frame. He recovered to record three consecutive outs, shutting the door and securing the one-run win and the series victory for Stony Brook.
