STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Behind a fast start at the plate and steady pitching, Stony Brook rolled to a 12-1 victory over Manhattan in seven innings on Tuesday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Freshman Dylan Henshaw made the start for the Seawolves this afternoon. After getting the first batter of the game to line out, the right-hander worked out of early trouble, stranding a runner on second with a strikeout to end the top of the first.
- Nick Zampieron led off the bottom half with an eight-pitch walk, then immediately stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Nicholas Dromboski followed with a walk and moved into scoring position on a stolen base before Chanz Doughty drew another walk to load the bases with no outs.
- Manhattan turned to the bullpen, but Stony Brook capitalized. Chris Carson brought home Zamperion with a groundout, and Luke Szepek followed with an RBI single to score Dromboski. Doughty later came around on an error, giving the Seawolves a quick 3-0 lead after one inning.
- Manhattan got one back in the second on a sacrifice fly, but the Seawolves limited the damage. Szepek cut down a runner attempting to steal, and Henshaw induced a popout to leave another runner stranded at third.
- Stony Brook responded immediately in the bottom of the second. A wild pitch allowed Mike Cervoni to score, and Zamperion added a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 5-1. Later in the inning, Doughty broke it open with a two-run shot to left, pushing the advantage to 7-1.
- Henshaw continued to settle in, stranding another runner at third with a strikeout in the third inning.
- With two outs in the bottom half, Cervoni delivered again, launching his first career home run over the left field fence to make it 8-1.
- Ty Panariello took over on the mound in the fourth and worked efficiently. After allowing a one-out single, he induced a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.
- The Seawolves added another run in the fourth, as Szepek lifted a sacrifice fly to bring in Doughty and stretch the lead to 9-1.
- Panariello kept Manhattan off the board in the fifth, stranding a runner on second to end the threat. Stony Brook broke things open even further in the bottom half, extending the lead to 12-1. Zamperion drove in two with an RBI triple, and Dromboski followed with a ground-rule double to plate another run.
- In the sixth, Panariello worked around a leadoff single by inducing a 4-6-3 double play before getting a groundout to end the inning.
- After a scoreless bottom of the sixth, Evan Kay came out of the bullpen and closed the door, securing the 12-1 run-rule victory for Stony Brook in seven innings.
