STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Stony Brook Seawolves jumped out early and fought back to tie things midway through, but a late surge from Monmouth gave the Seawolves an 8-4 loss at Joe Nathan Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- H. Colagrande got the start for the Seawolves this afternoon. The right-hander tossed an opening 1-2-3 inning, highlighted by a diving play from Mike Cervoni and a strikeout to conclude the frame.
- Nicholas Dromboski started the bottom of the first with a two-out double and later scored following two wild pitches to give the Seawolves an early 1-0 lead.
- H. Colagrande came back out in the top of the second and struck out the first two batters before a groundout ended another 1-2-3 inning. Scott Gell singled in the bottom half, but that was all for the Seawolves in the frame.
- After allowing a leadoff single in the third, Colagrande recorded a strikeout before a two-run shot by the Hawks gave Monmouth a 2-1 lead. Monmouth added two more unearned runs in the inning to take a 4-1 advantage.
- Colagrande settled in during the fourth, tossing a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts.
- Chanz Doughty led off the bottom of the fourth with a single up the middle to extend his hitting streak to five games, and Chris Carson followed with his second homer of the season. Later in the inning, Cervoni brought home Johnny Pilla with a single to tie the game at 4-4.
- Monmouth threatened in the fifth with two runners reaching on walks, but a 5-4-3 double play ended the inning and kept the game tied.
- After a scoreless bottom half for the Seawolves, Monmouth regained the lead in the sixth on a solo homer to right-center, making it 5-4.
- Aidan Colagrande entered in the seventh with a one-run deficit. The left-hander allowed a run but struck out two batters and escaped further damage with runners on base as Monmouth took a 6-4 lead.
- Cervoni recorded his second hit of the afternoon to lead off the bottom of the seventh, but the Seawolves were unable to capitalize.
- Monmouth added another run in the eighth on a sacrifice bunt to extend the lead to 7-4. Doughty singled again in the bottom half, but Stony Brook was held scoreless.
- The Hawks opened the ninth with a solo homer to push the lead to 8-4. Evan Kay entered out of the bullpen and stranded the bases loaded with a flyout to left field to limit the damage.
- Cervoni picked up his third hit of the game with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but the Seawolves could not mount a comeback.
