Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader, Takes Series Over Monmouth

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Stony Brook used a dominant outing from Micah Worley in Game 1 and timely hitting in Game 2 to sweep Monmouth in a Saturday doubleheader. The Seawolves took the opener 3-1 before rallying late for a 5-2 win in the nightcap to secure the series victory at Joe Nathan Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
  • Micah Worley made the start for the Seawolves in the first game of the afternoon. The left-hander was dominant early, tossing a 1-2-3 top of the first.
  • Nick Zampieron got the Seawolves going with a walk in the bottom of the first, then stole second and moved to third on a groundout by Nicholas Dromboski. Chanz Doughty followed with an RBI sac fly, giving the Seawolves an early 1-0 lead.
  • Worley worked around a leadoff single in the second by striking out the next three batters. Stony Brook went down in order in the bottom half, keeping it 1-0.
  • The Stony Brook left-hander kept dealing in the top of the third, tossing another 1-2-3 inning and picking up his fourth strikeout of the afternoon to end the frame.
  • Zampeiron reached again in the bottom of the third with a two-out single, extending his hitting streak to five games. Dromboski followed with a single up the middle to move Zampieron to third, and Zampieron later scored on a Hawks error to give the Seawolves a 2-0 lead after three innings.
  • Worley worked around a two-out single in the top of the fourth, getting a groundout to end the inning and hold the two-run lead.
  • Chris Carson led off the bottom of the fourth with a bunt single, but the Hawks retired the next three Seawolves in order to end the inning.
  • Monmouth put two runners on with one out in the top of the fifth. Carson then made a diving catch on a line drive and doubled off the runner at second to end the inning, keeping it 2-0.
  • Mike Cervoni opened the bottom of the fifth with a single through the left side and moved to second with one out on a sac bunt by James Schaffer. After advancing to third, Cervoni scored on a two-out RBI single to right-center by Dromboski, giving the Seawolves a 3-0 lead.
  • After recording his seventh strikeout with one out in the top of the sixth, Worley allowed a double to left-center. He responded by picking up his eighth strikeout of the day, stranding the runner at second.
  • Following a scoreless bottom of the seventh for the Seawolves, Worley returned to the mound in the top of the eighth and tossed another 1-2-3 inning.
  • John Rizzo came on in relief in the top of the ninth and allowed one run, but sealed the 3-1 win with a line-drive double play to Carson that earned his fourth victory of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
  • John Rizzo came right back on the mound after earning the save in the first game of the afternoon. The Hawks struck first in the top of the first, taking a 1-0 lead on a sac fly to right field.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the first, Carson delivered a double down the right field line that brought in Zampieron to tie the game at 1-1.
  • Rizzo bounced back in the top of the second with a 1-2-3 inning, recording two strikeouts in the frame.
  • After a scoreless bottom of the second for the Seawolves, highlighted by a single from Mike Villiani, Rizzo followed with another 1-2-3 inning in the top of the third.

  • Monmouth tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth on a solo home run over the left field fence.

  • Cervoni opened the bottom of the fifth with a double down the line but was picked off at second for the first out. Zampieron later added a two-out single for his second hit of the game, but he was left on base.
  • Monmouth threatened in the top of the sixth with a leadoff single and back-to-back walks to load the bases with one out. Christian Martinez came out of the bullpen and got a ground ball double play at the plate and first to escape the jam with the game still tied.
  • Doughty led off the bottom of the sixth with a single, and Monmouth went to the bullpen with one out. Doughty advanced to second with two outs but was stranded after a fly out and a ground out.
  • The Hawks put a runner on second with one out in the top of the seventh, but Martinez picked him off, throwing to Schaffer at third to end the threat.
  • Villiani started the bottom of the seventh with a single and moved to second on a sac bunt by Mike Cervoni. He later scored on a single by Zampieron to give the Seawolves a 3-2 lead.
