STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Stony Brook rallied from an early deficit and came through in the clutch, as Nick Zampieron delivered a walk-off single in the 10th inning to lift the Seawolves to a 7-6 win over UNCW on Friday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Worley made the start for the Seawolves this afternoon. The left-hander sat down the first two hitters before a walk and an error gave UNCW runners on second and third with two outs. Worley recorded a strikeout to end the threat. The Seawolves were also held scoreless after one inning of play.
- UNCW took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second after a walk and a single led to a sac-bunt RBI for the Seahawks.
- Nicholas Dromboski led off the bottom of the second with a double down the left-field line, followed by walks from Scott Gell and Matthew Jackson to load the bases with no outs. The Seahawks recorded a strikeout, but the Seawolves tied the game on a James Schaffer fielder's choice and took a 2-1 lead on a balk by UNCW.
- UNCW responded in the top of the third with three runs on two hits and two errors to take a 4-2 advantage.
- Nick Zampieron began the bottom half of the third with a single up the middle on the first pitch of the frame, but UNCW turned a strikeout-throwout double play to clear the bases.
- Scott Gell threw a runner out at first base on a pickoff to end the threat with two runners on in the top of the fourth. Aidyn Coffey recorded a two-out hit by pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch, but the Seawolves were held scoreless.
- Following a leadoff walk and the runner advancing to second on a groundout, Christian Martinez entered the game for the Seawolves. UNCW added another run in the inning on a passed ball to go up 5-2.
- Chris Carson got the Seawolves going in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff triple and was later brought in on a sac fly by Villani to cut the deficit to 5-3.
- Martinez came back out for the top of the sixth and stranded a two-out walk to keep it a two-run game. Dromboski and Gell hit back-to-back singles before they were brought in on a bunt single by Coffey that tied the score at 5-5.
- Martinez continued to deal in the next inning, setting the Seahawks down in order with Gell throwing out a runner attempting to steal second base.
- Zampieron again started the inning with a hit, this time leading off the bottom half with a double down the left-field line. A bunt by Jack Scheri and an intentional walk to Dromboski loaded the bases for the Seawolves. Gell gave the Seawolves a 6-5 advantage with a sac fly to center field.
- John Rizzo entered the game for the Seawolves out of the bullpen in the top of the eighth inning. The Seahawks tallied an unearned run in the inning to tie the game at 6-6.
- After a scoreless bottom of the eighth for the Seawolves, UNCW led off the top of the ninth with a walk and loaded the bases with a double and another walk with one out. However, Rizzo escaped the jam with a groundout to first and batter's interference to keep the game tied.
- The Seawolves got a runner to third base in the bottom of the ninth inning but were unable to push across a run, sending the game into extra innings.
- UNCW again recorded a leadoff walk to begin the 10th inning and added a one-out single to put runners on first and second. However, the Seawolves turned a 4-6-3 double play to end the threat.
- Matthew Jackson started the bottom of the 10th with a leadoff walk and stole second base with no outs. Coffey recorded a bunt single that put runners on the corners with no outs for Schaffer. Schaffer drew an intentional walk before Zampieron hit a single up the middle to give Stony Brook a 7-6 victory on Friday afternoon.
