TOWSON, Md. - Stony Brook battled back and forth with Towson in a game that featured multiple lead changes and timely hitting on both sides. However, the Seawolves grabbed a late edge in the ninth, but Towson responded in the final frame to secure a 9-7 win and even the series heading into the finale.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- With two outs in the top of the first, Chanz Doughty and Chris Carson worked back-to-back walks before Scott Gell put Stony Brook on the board with an RBI single to left-center.
- Towson answered in the bottom half, but the Seawolves regained the lead in the second when Mike Cervoni launched a solo home run to left, making it 2-1.
- After allowing a one-out double in the bottom of the second, Micah Worley worked out of trouble with a strikeout and a groundout to strand the runner.
- Stony Brook added on in the third. Doughty came around to score on a throwing error by the first baseman off the bat of Villani, pushing the lead to 3-1. Worley followed with a clean 1-2-3 inning in the bottom half to maintain the two-run edge.
- The Seawolves were held scoreless in the fourth, and Towson took advantage, plating three runs on four hits and an error to move ahead 4-3.
- Stony Brook responded in the fifth with three runs to reclaim the lead. Gell and Matthew Jackson each singled to set the table, and Cervoni delivered a two-RBI single through the left side. Nick Zampieron capped the inning with an RBI single to make it 6-4.
- Christian Martinez entered in the bottom of the fifth and stranded a one-out double, recording a flyout and a strikeout to end the threat.
- The Seawolves were quiet in the sixth, while Towson chipped away with a run in the sixth and another in the eighth to tie the game at 6-6.
- In the ninth, Villani sparked the go-ahead rally with a walk, stole second, and moved to third on a groundout by Jackson. He scored on a wild pitch to give Stony Brook a 7-6 lead.
- Towson answered in the bottom half. After a one-out single and a walk against Martinez, the Tigers hit a three-run home run to left field to secure a 9-7 win and even the series heading into the finale.
