FAIRFIELD, Conn. - In a game that swung back and forth all afternoon, Stony Brook came up with the final answer and outlasted Fairfield 12-10 on the road behind a late push and steady relief pitching.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Seawolves jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Following a leadoff walk by Nick Zampieron and a single by Nicholas Dromboski, Chanz Doughty launched a two-run double to bring both runners home. Doughty later scored on a Szepek RBI to give Stony Brook the early advantage.
- Hunter Colagrande made the start for the Seawolves, allowing two solo home runs in the first inning but working out of trouble with a 6-4-3 double play to keep Stony Brook in front after the opening frame.
- Mike Cervoni reached second with one out in the second inning after a sac bunt by James Schaffer and advanced to third on an infield single by Zampieron. Cervoni later scored on a passed ball to push the Seawolves lead to 4-2.
- After Colagrande recorded the first two outs in the bottom of the second, a strikeout and wild pitch extended the inning before two walks brought Matthew Canizares out of the bullpen. The Stags capitalized on the change and took a 5-4 lead.
- Stony Brook responded immediately in the top of the third, scoring five runs on three hits to retake a 9-5 lead. After singles from Villani and Jackson, Cervoni cleared the bases with a double. Schaffer later scored on a wild pitch, and Zampieron added a sacrifice fly to extend the lead.
- Fairfield answered again in the bottom of the third, scoring four runs on four hits to tie the game at 9-9. The Stags added another run in the fourth to take a 10-9 lead.
- Luca Mannino and Evan Kay provided key relief out of the bullpen, each tossing scoreless innings in the fifth and sixth to keep the Seawolves within striking distance.
- Stony Brook regained control in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs to take a 12-10 lead. Chris Carson opened the inning with a solo home run. After a double by Gell and a single by Villani, Matthew Jackson and James Schaffer helped bring both runners home, with Schaffer delivering a key single.
- With a runner on first in the seventh, Aidan Colagrande entered in relief and stranded two runners with a lineout and strikeout to end the threat.
- After a scoreless eighth from the Seawolves offense, Colagrande again worked out of trouble in the bottom half, stranding two runners with no outs to preserve the two-run lead.
