LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - After battling back from an early five-run deficit to even the score midway through the game following back to back homers from
Nicholas Dromboski and
Chanz Doughty, Stony Brook could not hold off a late Rider surge and fell 11-5 on the road.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Chanz Doughty drew a two-out walk and stole second base in the top of the first inning but was left stranded to end the threat.
- Christian Martinez made his first start of the season for the Seawolves. Rider struck first, scoring three runs in the opening inning on a two-run homer and an RBI sacrifice fly.
- After the Broncos added one run in both the second and third innings to build a 5-0 lead, Stony Brook answered in the top of the fourth. Doughty led off the frame with a double before Scott Gell drove him home with an RBI single to center field to cut the deficit to 5-1.
- Nicholas Rizzo entered in relief in the bottom of the fourth and worked around a one-out double, stranding the runner with a fly out and line out.
- The Seawolves stormed back in the top of the fifth, scoring four runs to tie the game at 5-5. James Schaffer walked and Nick Zampieron singled before Nicholas Dromboski launched a three-run homer. On the very next pitch, Doughty connected on a solo shot to even the score.
- Rizzo returned for the bottom half and delivered a 1-2-3 inning.
- Stony Brook threatened in the sixth with two-out singles from Schaffer and Zampieron but left both runners on base. Rizzo answered again in the bottom half, stranding runners on first and third with a fly out to Dromboski in foul territory.
- After the Seawolves were retired quietly in the top of the seventh, Rizzo continued to work through trouble by navigating around a leadoff single with back-to-back fielder's choices to keep the game tied through seven innings.
- Rider broke through in the bottom of the eighth, opening the inning with a solo homer before adding five more runs to take an 11-5 lead.
- Zampieron walked and Dromboski singled in the bottom of the ninth inning, reaching second and third with two outs before Rider got the final out of the game to secure their six-run victory over Stony Brook.
