Seawolves Roll Past UMass Lowell in Seven-Inning Run-Rule Win

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Chanz Doughty drove in six runs and Micah Worley delivered a stellar start as Stony Brook beat UMass Lowell 11-1 in seven innings on Friday afternoon at Joe Nathan Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Seawolves jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after Micah Worley tossed a 1-2-3 top of the first inning. Nick Zampieron led off the game with a double to center field and later scored on a long sacrifice fly by Chanz Doughty.
  • Worley returned in the top of the second and struck out the first two batters before stranding a two-out single with another strikeout to preserve the lead. Mike Villani drew a one-out walk in the bottom half of the inning and moved to second on a single by Matthew Jackson, but UMass Lowell recorded back-to-back outs to end the threat.
  • UMass Lowell recorded the first two outs of the top of the third on just two pitches before a two-out single gave the River Hawks a baserunner. Worley responded with a fly out to end the frame and keep Stony Brook in front 1-0.
  • Zampieron opened the bottom of the third by getting hit by a pitch, reaching base for the second time on the day. After stealing second, Nicholas Dromboski moved him to third with an infield single before Doughty brought him home with another sacrifice fly to extend the Seawolves' lead to 2-0.
  • The Stony Brook left-hander worked around trouble in the top of the fourth, stranding runners at first and second with a fly out to right field.
  • The Seawolves broke things open with a two-out rally in the bottom of the fourth. James Schaffer and Zampieron delivered back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners before Zampieron stole second. Dromboski then drew a walk to load the bases for Doughty, who cleared them with a double down the left field line to give Stony Brook a 6-0 advantage.
  • Worley allowed a two-out single in the top of the fifth but quickly erased the runner with a pickoff at first to close out the inning.
  • After a scoreless bottom of the fifth for the Seawolves, Luca Mannino took over in relief in the top of the sixth following five scoreless innings from Worley, who struck out four batters. Mannino allowed one run but stranded a runner at first with a groundout to maintain Stony Brook's 6-1 lead.
  • Doughty recorded his sixth RBI of the game in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double, and Matt Gell followed with a sacrifice fly to extend the Stony Brook lead to 8-1.
  • Mannino worked around trouble in the top of the seventh after allowing a one-out double, stranding the runner at third with a groundout to first base.
  • In the bottom half of the inning, Carson delivered an RBI single, Dromboski scored on a wild pitch, and Luke Szepek capped things off with a pinch-hit walk-off RBI single to secure Stony Brook's 11-1 run-rule victory in seven innings.
