Strong Relief Effort Not Enough as Seawolves Fall to Hofstra on Thursday

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Seawolves got strong pitching and made key defensive plays, but Hofstra's early offense was enough to secure a 4-0 win on Friday over Stony Brook at Joe Nathan Field to begin the weekend series.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Seawolves trailed heading into the bottom of the first after Hofstra strung together five straight hits to build an early 3-0 advantage against right-hander Hunter Colagrande.
  • Chanz Doughty delivered a two-out double down the left field line in the home half of the inning, but the Pride escaped the frame with a ground out.
  • Colagrande responded with a clean 1-2-3 second inning to settle in on the mound.
  • Stony Brook was retired in order in the bottom half, but the defense kept things in check as Nicholas Dromboski made a leaping grab in the gap to save extra bases and Scott Gell later threw out a runner at second to preserve the three-run margin.
  • James Schaffer recorded a one-out single in the third for the Seawolves' second baserunner of the afternoon. Nick Zampieron followed with a base hit to center, moving Schaffer into scoring position, but Hofstra ended the threat with consecutive strikeouts.
  • Chris Carson worked a walk and swiped second in the fourth, though Stony Brook was unable to capitalize.
  • Colagrande navigated around a leadoff single in the fifth and stranded a runner at third by inducing a ground out to Mike Villani to keep Hofstra's lead at three.
  • After the Seawolves were set down in order in the bottom of the fifth, Hofstra opened the sixth with a double and a walk, prompting Ty Panariello to enter from the bullpen. The righty immediately answered by striking out back-to-back batters, including one on three pitches, to strand both runners in scoring position.
  • Stony Brook was again held scoreless in the sixth before Panariello returned for the seventh. Hofstra put together two singles and a two-out walk to load the bases, but Panariello escaped the jam with a fly out to right.
  • Matthew Jackson nearly sparked the offense in the seventh with a two-out double off the right field fence, but he was left stranded as the Pride maintained their 3-0 lead through seven innings.
  • Panariello allowed a leadoff single in the eighth before Aidan Colagrande took over with two outs and a runner on second. The left-hander induced a ground out to Schaffer to keep Hofstra off the board.
  • Zampieron reached on an error in the bottom of the eighth and moved to second after Doughty singled with two outs, but Hofstra again worked out of trouble with an infield fly ball.
  • The Pride added to their lead in the top of the ninth with a solo home run over the right field fence, extending the advantage to 4-0.
  • Mike Villani got the Seawolves a one-out single in the bottom of the ninth that brought the Hofstra starting pitcher out of the game. However, the Pride held on to secure the 4-0 victory on Thursday afternoon.
