Worley Deals, Late Hofstra Surge Downs Seawolves

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Powered by dominant work on the mound from Micah Worley, the Seawolves matched Hofstra through six innings before the Hofstra Pride used a late offensive push to take down Stony Brook 8-1 on Friday afternoon at Joe Nathan Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Micah Worley got the start for the Seawolves on Friday afternoon. The left-hander allowed a two-out solo homer in the opening frame as Hofstra grabbed an early 1-0 lead.
  • Nick Zampieron sparked the Stony Brook offense with a lead-off single in the bottom of the first and quickly stole second. Nicholas Dromboski followed with a walk to put the first two Seawolves aboard, but Hofstra worked out of the jam to hold its advantage.
  • Worley responded with a strong second inning, retiring the Pride in order while striking out two. Hofstra maintained its 1-0 edge as both sides were kept quiet through two innings.
  • The Seawolves' starter stayed in rhythm in the third, setting down Hofstra in order once again. Zampieron reached with a one-out walk in the home half, but Stony Brook was unable to bring him around.
  • Worley continued to deal in the fourth, striking out two more during his third straight 1-2-3 inning. Stony Brook broke through in the bottom half when Scott Gell singled and Matthew Jackson was hit by a pitch. James Schaffer delivered the key swing with a two-out RBI single to right, evening the score at 1-1.
  • The left-hander carried his momentum into the fifth, tossing his fourth consecutive perfect inning while recording his sixth strikeout. Chanz Doughty added a two-out single in the bottom half, but the game remained tied.
  • Worley's dominant stretch continued in the sixth as he retired his 16th straight batter and added another strikeout. In the bottom half, Gell opened with another base hit and advanced into scoring position, but Hofstra escaped the threat to keep the game tied heading into the seventh.
  • Hofstra found its first offensive breakthrough since the opening inning in the seventh, using a leadoff double and RBI single to regain a 2-1 lead. John Rizzo entered in relief and limited further damage, recording a lineout and strikeout to keep Stony Brook within one.
  • After a scoreless bottom of the seventh for the Seawolves, Hofstra added insurance in the eighth. The Pride used consecutive singles and a pair of doubles to extend the lead before ultimately building a 7-1 advantage.
  • Stony Brook was held scoreless in the bottom of the eighth before Rizzo returned to the mound for the ninth. The Pride tallied a two-out triple that brought home a run, taking an 8-1 lead and securing the victory on Friday afternoon.
