Women's Soccer Plays to Draw With UConn in Season Opener

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The Stony Brook University women's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw with UConn on Thursday evening at LaValle Stadium in the 2026 season opener. Emanuelly Ferreira and Emily Lemke registered goals, while Jona Hennings registered 12 saves.

The Huskies generated early pressure, registering eight shots in the opening half, five of which were on target. Hennings responded admirably, making five saves. The first breakthrough came just over 10 minutes into the first half when Stony Brook earned a penalty after Lemke was taken down in the box. Lemke proceeded to step up and converted the penalty kick, placing the ball in the bottom left corner to give the home side a 1‑0 advantage.

Minutes later, Lemke stepped up for another chance off a penalty kick after Maya Corbett was taken down in the box. After scoring on her first attempt, Lemke this time tried the lower right corner and was turned away by Onorato.

The second half opened with UConn turning the tide, finding the equalizer less than three minutes into the second half. With 33 minutes left, Lemke netted what seemed to be her second goal of the evening before it was ruled offside and later confirmed offside by video review.

The Seawolves answered later on, retaking the lead when Ferreira scored from the corner, perfectly placing a ball on the goal line that the Huskies could not clear. Ferreira's goal came in the 79th minute.

The match's climactic moment arrived in the waning minutes of the second half. After a series of saves by both keepers, Ines Nourani broke through on the right side, delivering a low cross to Chloe Shimkin, who threaded the ball to Montano for the final pass to Nourani herself. She finished with a right‑footed strike to the bottom right of the net, tying the game at 2‑2 in the 83rd minute.

Both sides concluded the match with identical shot totals: UConn 21 attempts (14 on target) and Stony Brook 10 attempts (7 on target). Hennings made 12 saves, while UConn's keeper recorded five. Each team received a single yellow card.

Stony Brook returns to action on Sunday, August 16 when New Haven visits LaValle Stadium for a 1 pm kickoff. The contest will stream live on FloCollege.
