DOVER, Del. – The Stony Brook football team returns to the field this evening as the Seawolves will battle the Delaware State Hornets at Alumni Stadium in Delaware with kick-off set for 6 pm.

OPENING KICK 
  • This marks the first matchup in program history between these two teams. LB Anthony Ferrelli, QB Quinn Boyd, WR Seth Sweitzer, DL Abraham Clinkscales, and DL Sebastian Regis have been named captains for the 2026 season, with Ferrelli being the only two-time captain of the group. 
  • Stony Brook football team has been picked to finish fifth in the 2026 CAA Preseason Coaches Poll, with four players (Joseph Garcia, Miles McGoy, Anthony Ferrelli, and Sebastian Regis) earning spots on the CAA Football Preseason All-Conference Team. 
  • Ferrelli was named to the 2026 Buck Buchanan Award Preseason Watch List, which is presented annually to the top defensive player in FCS college football. He was also named a Preseason All-American by Stats Perform and Phil Steele. 
  • Stony Brook football team has been picked to finish fourth in the 2025 CAA Preseason Coaches Poll, with six players earning spots on the CAA Football Preseason All-Conference Team. 
  • Stony Brook will be looking to snap a six-game opener losing streak dating back to 2019 when they defeated Bryant 35-10. A win over the Hornets will also mark their first opening road victory since the 2013 season when they took down Rhode Island 24-0. 
  • Delaware State had the largest turnaround as head coach DeSean Jackson led the Hornets to a 8-4 record. The eight wins are more wins than the Hornets had in the previous three seasons (7). The team also had the No. 1 ranked FCS rushing team in the nation (290.9). 
  • The Seawolves got 12 new commitments from seven different states to the Stony Brook football program on their 2026 Early National Signing Day, as included RB Tyshawn Bent, WR Keaton Ramey, TE Lance Mahon, LB Sai'Quan Olfus, WR Frenchmon Bethea, QB Brittin Poffenbarger, OLB Cayden Bridges, S Jerek Cooper, OL Joshua Witherspoon, CB Justus Gaskin, LB Zedrick Patterson, and OL Liam Orrego joined the team. 
  • The road team returns multiple starters on both sides of the ball, including (QB) Quinn Boyd, (OL) Justin Kaye, (S) Joseph Garcia, (CB) Miles McGoy, Sebastian Regis (DE), AJ Roberts (LB), Anthony Ferrelli (LB), (K) Michael Mannino, (S) DaMario Crawford, and (OL) Kevin Garcia. 
  • Former Stony Brook standout and current UFC fighter Dominick Reyes '13 was inducted into the Stony Brook Athletics Hall of Fame. Known as "The Devastator", Reyes is 16-5 in his professional career and is currently the No. 11 ranked Light Heavyweight fighter in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). 
THE COSH ERA CONTINUES 
  • Billy Cosh was named the third head coach in Stony Brook football's Division I era on December 13, 2023. Cosh came to Stony Brook for his first head coaching position after serving as Western Michigan's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2023. 
  • Prior to Western Michigan, Cosh spent three seasons as an FCS offensive coordinator at Richmond and VMI. 
  • In his first season at Stony Brook in 2024, Cosh led the Seawolves to an 8-4 record (5-3 CAA), marking the program's first winning season since 2018 after going 0-10 the previous year. 
  • Cosh was named AFCA FCS Coach of the Year, AFCA Regional Coach of the Year, CAA Coach of the Year and Walter Camp FCS Coach of the Year in 2024. 
  • He helped the Seawolves to a 6-6 record last year and dominated at home by going 5-1. 
  • His 14 wins in his first two seasons are the most of any Stony Brook head coach in their first two years.
  •  At age 34, Cosh is one of the top-five youngest coaches at the FCS level and would be the second youngest at the FBS level. 
FOLLOWING THE CAPTAINS
  • LB Anthony Ferrelli, DL Abraham Clinkscales, WR Seth Sweitzer, QB Quinn Boyd, and DL Sebastian Regis have been named captains for the 2026 season. 
  • Ferrelli returns to Stony Brook in his redshirt senior season after one of the most accomplished seasons by a linebacker in program history last year. The California native recorded a career-high 109 tackles (52 solo, 57 assisted), ranking fifth in the CAA and 23rd nationally in the FCS in both total tackles and tackles per game. His 109 tackles tied for the third-most in a single season in Stony Brook program history. He enters the year just 98 tackles shy of the program's all-time record and needs 34 more tackles to move into the top 10 in program history, passing Dom Reyes. 
  • Regis leads the team in his junior season as the Long Island native is coming off a 2025 season where he started all 12 games and finished second on the team with 10.0 tackles for loss while adding 2.5 sacks, 3.0 quarterback hurries, and career highs with 33 total tackles and 19 solo stops. Regis recorded at least one tackle in 11 of 12 contests and registered a tackle for loss in nine games. 
  • Boyd started the final five games for the Seawolves under center last season and shined as the rookie earned CAA Rookie of the Week in the final week of the season. Over the five starts, Boyd Boyd totaled 1,431 yards of offense, averaging 286.2 yards per game. He recorded 10 passing touchdowns, two rushing touchdowns, and did not throw an interception during that span. 
  • Clinckscales played four seasons along the defensive line at Albany State, helping the Golden Rams win the 2025 SIAC Championship and Division II HBCU National Championship. In 2025, he recorded 23 tackles, eight tackles for loss and 5.0 sacks in 13 games, following a 2024 season with a career-high 33 tackles and 6.0 tackles for loss. 
  • Sweitzer appeared in all 12 games in his final season at Merrimack, leading the team with 31 receptions for 403 yards and three touchdowns. He also added five carries for 48 yards, setting career highs in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. 
PORTAL, PORTAL ON THE WALL  ABOUT THE HORNETS 
  • Head coach and former NFL star DeSean Jackson leads DSU after earning HBCU Coach of the Year honors in 2025 as his first season as head coach.
  • Jackson led the Hornets to a 8-4 record last season, with the eight wins being more wins than the Hornets had in the previous three seasons (7). 
  • The Hornets head coach NFL accolades include Second Team All-Pro (2009), three Pro Bowl nods (2009, 2010, and 2013), and the Pro Football Writers Association All-Rookie Team (2008). His 2010 Pro Bowl selection was the first time in history that a player was selected at two different positions in the same year: wide receiver and return specialist. 
  • Earning Preseason All-MEAC honors were OL Diu Dau, DB Wayne Favors, WR Nate Stewart, DL Quoy Rainey, and LB Quentin Johnson. 
  • The Hornets were selected to finish third in the MEAC with two first place votes. 
  • This will be the first-ever matchup between these two programs.
