STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Stony Brook women's soccer secured a hard-fought 1‑0 victory over Monmouth on Sunday afternoon at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. Emanuelly Ferreira's second‑half goal was the decisive moment.
The opening half saw Monmouth press forward, registering eleven shots with four on target, but Stony Brook's back line held firm despite the constant pressure. The Hawks controlled possession for a majority of the first half, allowing just four shots from the Seawolves with just one on target, and generating four corners to Stony Brook's zero.
The pivotal moment of the contest came at the start of the second half when Ferreira broke the deadlock. Good ball movement from Juni Einarsson and Maya Corbett flipped the field and led to a Ferreira cross that deflected off a Monmouth player and into the back of the net.
The fortuitous bounce flipped the script in the opening moments of the second half, forcing Monmouth to chase an equalizer. The Hawks intensified pressure, adding nine more shots in the final period, yet only four found the net's frame. Despite their increased volume, the Hawks could not breach Hennings, who made two second‑period saves, including one late on a desperation dive to the post that maintained the lead.
With the victory, Stony Brook remained unbeaten and won its conference opener in a rematch of last season's CAA Semifinal. The win marked the Seawolves' third at LaValle Stadium this season.
The Seawolves return to action with a pair of conference games in North Carolina against Elon (Sept. 24) and Campbell (Sept. 27).
