The Stony Brook softball team suffered a sweep at Fairfield on
Saturday as the Stags limited the Seawolves to just one run on the day. FU
defeated Stony Brook 5-1 in game one and 8-0 in five innings in game two.
In the first game, Fairfield (14-17) used a five-hit, three-run fifth inning to break the
game open en route to the 5-1 victory. USB (3-21) kept it close until the fifth when
the Stags extended their lead to 5-0. The Seawolves' only score came in the sixth
when senior Tricia Lipareli's RBI double scored freshman Cassidee Broadwater.
Broadwater was 2-for-3 from the plate, including a double. Sophomore pitcher
Stephanie Poetzsch (2-11) struck out nine, allowing seven hits and five runs.
Fairfield pitcher Melissa Santos recorded 14 strikeouts on the day, allowing only
four hits and a run.
Fairfield dominated game two, limiting the Seawolves to just five hits and recording
its first shutout of the year with the 8-0 win. Senior pitcher Cassie Rupp (1-10)
picked up the loss on the mound.
The Seawolves return to action on Tuesday when they host Columbia at 3 p.m. at
University Field.
