Junior Kelly McKenna led the Rider softball team to a
sweep of Stony Brook on Thursday with six RBI on four hits, including a double and
a home run.
In game one, which Rider won 8-3, the Broncs scored three runs in the first inning,
two on a single by McKenna. The Seawolves cut the lead to 3-1, but Rider scored
twice more in the third inning on a two-run double by McKenna. USB again chipped
at the lead in the fourth when junior Samantha Foronjy and senior Cassie Rupp both
drove in runs. However, the Broncs' Michelle Peel's three-run homer in the sixth
sealed the victory for Rider. Junior Victoria Menchise was 2-for-3 from the plate with a
run scored, and sophomore Kate Deck also went 2-for-3, including a double, and
scored a run for USB. Sophomore Stephanie Poetzsch picked up the loss on the
mound. Poetzsch (2-10) gave up eight runs on seven hits and struck out six
batters.
In game two, a 9-0 win for Rider in five innings, McKenna's two-run home run in the
bottom of the fifth inning ended the game. The Broncs blasted USB for nine hits
and two home runs en route to the victory, which improved Rider's record to 15-9 on
the season. Rupp picked up her ninth loss of the season (1-9), while Stony Brook is
now 3-19 overall.
The Seawolves return to the field on Saturday as they travel to face Fairfield in a
doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
