Stony Brook, N.Y. -
The Stony Brook softball team notched its first win of its first
season as a Division I program on Tuesday as the Seawolves split a doubleheader
with St. John's at University Field.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, the game was still scoreless when Christie
McMurray went to the plate. With Tory Menchise at first base, McMurray went the full
count before hitting a single to left field that drove in Menchise for the winning run.
Sophomore pitcher Stephanie Poetzsch was stellar on the mound, striking out
seven batters and giving up only two hits and no runs.
St. John's pitcher Gina Calabrese had nine strikeouts, giving up one run on two
hits.
Game two would be a different story. After a scoreless first inning, the Red Storm
exploded for eight runs on seven hits in the second inning. St. John's recorded a
home run and two doubles in the inning for an insurmountable 8-0 lead. The Red
Storm added two runs in the fourth inning for a 10-0 lead. The Seawolves finally got
on the board in the fifth, as Tricia Lipareli's single drove in Kate Deck for Stony
Brook's only score.
Stony Brook improves to 1-11 on the season, while St. John's is now 12-14.
