Men's Soccer Hits The Road For Conference Matchups

Oct. 18, 2001

The Matchup: Stony Brook (4-4-2, 1-3-1 America East) hopes to get back on the winning track this weekend as the Seawolves face important America East matchups with Northeastern (8-4, 4-1 America East) and Boston University (7-4-1, 3-1-1). The Seawolves, who have won just once in their last six games, tied with Delaware 2-2 on Sunday. Northeastern fell 2-0 to Dartmouth on Wednesday, while BU defeated Maine 4-3 last weekend.

Series History: Northeastern leads the series 2-1, with the Seawolves' first win coming last year. Stony Brook defeated Northeastern 2-0 last year to extend its record to 7-1. Shane Arikian got SBU on the board early, and Juan Serna added a 30-yard blast with 20 minutes left. Dan Ferrin made six saves to earn his sixth shutout of the year.

Stony Brook has never faced Boston University.

Last Time Out: Delaware's (5-7-1, 2-2-1) Mike Honeysett scored twice in the final 27 minutes of regulation as the Blue Hens erased a 2-0 deficit and escaped Stony Brook (4-4-2, 1-3-1) with a 2-2 tie Sunday afternoon at University Field. It marked the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

Following a scoreless first half, Stony Brook's Jaime Serna took a pass from Ivan Perez 35 yards out, dribbled past charging Delaware goalkeeper Kyle Haynes and put it into the net. Less than 10 minutes later, Serna found Kevin Cameron, who dribbled in from the left side and put the ball past Haynes as the Seawolves took a 2-0 lead.

Honeysett and the Blue Hens then went to work. The junior forward took a pass from Dan Keane on the left side and lofted it into the far right corner of the net at the 63:50 mark. With just 4:09 to play the Blue Hens were awarded a free kick on a Stony Brook foul and capitalized. Honeysett drilled the ball into the net from the top of the penalty box to tie the game at 2-2 and force overtime.

The Blue Hens dominated the overtime stanza, outshooting the Seawolves 8-4 and earning six corner kicks, but could not put the ball in the net.

Dan Ferrin made seven stops for the Seawolves and Kyle Haynes made four saves for Delaware.

Scouting the Huskies and Terriers: Northeastern had a four-game winning streak snapped with Wednesday's 2-0 loss at Dartmouth. The Huskies' only conference loss was a 2-0 setback at Boston University.

Seniors Petter Starnas (6 goals, 2 assists) and Anders Hoyem (4 goals, 6 assists) lead NU in scoring, which has outscored its opponents 26-17. Sophomore Antha Kirkopoulos leads the America East in assists with seven in 11 games. Kirkopoulos received conference Rookie of the Week honors last week when he tallied a goal and three assists in two games last weekend.

Allan Lewis has started all 12 games in the goal, recording a goals-against average of 1.35 in 1063 minutes played, which ranks third in the conference. BU comes off a 4-3 victory over Maine and has not lost in its last three games, including an overtime win over Drexel and an overtime tie with New Hampshire.

Senior forward Joachim Kaland leads the America East with 12 goals (1.09 per game), while sophomore Andrew Dorman has tallied five goals and seven assists. Goalkeepers Matt Smith and Zak Thompson have both seen significant playing time, with Smith recording a 1.27 GAA in 639:02 while Thompson has a GAA of 1.45 in 496:59.

The Serna Show: The play of Jaime Serna on Sunday lifted Stony Brook to a 2-0 lead before the Blue Hens came back to tie the game and force overtime. The senior scored his first goal of the year and assisted on Kevin Cameron's goal, marking his best outing as a Seawolf during his three-year career.

Serna, who saw action in nine games last season, has played in eight contests this year. He has played every position on the field this season, and even saw time in the goal during spring practice when both Dan Ferrin and Matt Thibdeau were out with injuries.

He has three career goals to his credit, two coming during his first season in 1999.
