Maine (9-9|3-3 America East) had four different players register double digits in kills and held off a furious Stony Brook (10-13|3-3 AE) rally in defeating the Seawolves Saturday afternoon, 30-18, 33-31, 27-30, 18-30, 15-12.
Maine was clinging to a 9-8 lead until Leah Voss tallied one of her 19 kills to make it 10-8 and then the Black Bears put the defensive clamps on. Carmen Gabriel teamed with Claire Poliquin for a block and on the next play it was Poliquin and Voss with another as the Black Bears took control, 13-8.
Game one went back and forth until Maine used a 12-2 run to grab a 26-15 advantage. The Bears hit .333 in the game and Poliquin led the way with five of her 10 kills. Debra Falkenberg poured on seven kills in the game for Stony Brook, part of a match-high 22 kills for the senior, who also hit .462 in the match.
Valerie Maloy's kill pushed Stony Brook's game two lead to 24-21, but Maine stormed back, scoring the next five points to squeak ahead, 26-25. Gabriel - who had 14 kills and eight digs in the match - used two of them to break a 31-31 tie and win game two as the Black Bears took control.
The Seawolves held a one-point advantage in game three at 25-24 and got four attack errors by Maine and a kill from Maloy in closing the gap to 2-1 in games.
It was all Stony Brook in game four as they took a 9-4 lead and built a 19-9 lead - its largest of the game - before cruising to the victory and forcing the decisive fifth game.
Voss enjoyed a tremendous match for the Black Bears, hitting .256 with 19 kills and a match-high 18 digs. Cheryl Elliott had 51 assists and 10 digs.
Maloy had 18 kills, 10 digs and six service aces - one of five Stony Brook players with 10 digs or more. Susanne Westing had 15, Rachel Goldsmith and Falkenberg each had 10 and Julie Zub collected 14 to go along with her 44 assists.
