Former Maryland Player Named Women's Lacrosse Assistant Coach

Nov. 13, 2001

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Former University of Maryland letterwinner Meghan McNamara has been named the assistant coach of the Stony Brook University women's lacrosse team, head coach Danie Caro announced today. McNamara's primary responsibility will be working with the offense and the midfielders.

McNamara, a four-year starter for the Terrapins, had 13 goals and eight assists her senior season, capping off a career that saw her start 63 games at attack. The East Northport, N.Y., native had her best season as a junior, when she scored 20 goals and had eight assists for 28 points. She totaled 51 goals and 20 assists during her four years.

During McNamara's four years as a Terp, Maryland lost only four games (83-4) and won four national championship titles, part of a current streak of eight consecutive NCAA crowns. Maryland won the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament three of her four years, and McNamara received ACC All-Tournament Team honors as a senior.

Named a high school All-American in 1996 and 1997, McNamara helped lead Northport High School to the New York State finals two consecutive seasons. She also played soccer at Northport, helping lead the team to the New York State title in 1997.

"Meghan's playing experience and the level she excelled at will bring a lot to the program," Caro said. "She will be great at teaching the players how to win. As a first-year program, we don't want to go into our first season expecting to lose. Her enthusiasm for the game and her experience playing for one of the winningest programs in college sports will help give the team a winning attitude from Day One.:"

Women's lacrosse was added as the 20th sport at Stony Brook earlier this year, while Caro was named the the program's first head coach in July.
