Stony Brook, N.Y. -
The Stony Brook University softball team will open a new era under first-year head coach Megan Bryant this weekend at the Rebel Games in Orlando, Fla. The Seawolves' season kicks off on Sunday, March 18, with their debut against Central Connecticut, the first of 10 games in Orlando.
The Seawolves, who finished 4-31 last season in Diane Hobin's final year, will look to their five seniors, including top hitter Trish Lipareli, and junior pitcher Stephanie Poetzsch to establish a turnaround from last year's discouraging campaign. Lipareli led the team last season in six categories: batting average (.336), runs scored (15), hits (36), doubles (11), homeruns (2) and RBI (15). Meanwhile, Poetzsch became the all-time strikeouts leader in her first season with the Seawolves, fanning 119 batters and recording an ERA of 4.67 and should be even better this year with an improved defense behind her.
"We're looking forward to getting outside and opening the season," Bryant said. "Certainly we have some adjustments to make as far as being outside for the first time. Hopefully our focus and enthusiasm will be a big benefit for us this week."
Besides Central Connecticut, Stony Brook will also face UMBC, Cornell, Vermont, Augustana, Southern Connecticut, Army, UMass-Lowell and East Stroudsburg.
"Two things we will be looking for this week are good plate appearances and good communication on defense," Bryant said.
On their return, the Seawolves will hit the road for three double-headers in five days.
