Stony Brook, N.Y. -
The Stony Brook softball team (14-12) did not give up a hit in a doubleheader sweep of Maryland-Eastern Shore (0-28) on Saturday afternoon at Seawolves Field. The Seawolves won game one, 23-0, and game two, 14-0.
Stephanie Poetzsch (10-5) earned her second no-hitter of the season, pitching a perfect game as she struck out nine and did not give up a hit or a walk in five innings. In addition, with her 10th win of the season, she set a new Stony Brook record for most victories in a season by a Seawolves pitcher.
Stony Brook got on the board quickly, putting up six runs in the first inning and adding four more in the second. But it was the fourth inning where the Seawolves really exploded, scoring eight runs on three hits and two errors. The Lady Hawks had eight errors in the game, while SBU collected 12 hits. Poetzsch went a perfect 4-for-4, collecting five RBI and scoring four runs.
In the 14-0 victory in game two, Lindsey DeLaRosa (4-7) earned a no-hitter of her own, striking out three while walking none in five innings. The Seawolves struck for 14 hits and the Lady Hawks committed five errors. SBU again did most of its damage in the fourth inning, as the Seawolves scored six runs on five hits. Tory Menchise led Stony Brook at the plate with a perfect 3-for-3 outing, driving in three runs and scoring two.
With their 14th win, the Seawolves equalled the number of most wins in a season for a Stony Brook softball team.
