Stony Brook, N.Y. -
The Stony Brook softball team is taking on arguably its biggest rival when in-state foe Albany comes to town on Saturday, but much more is taking place on the diamond besides the Seawolves' doubleheader. A special pre-game ceremony to dedicate Stony Brook's brand-new softball field will be held prior to the first pitch.
Many former players, coaches, university dignitaries, parents and friends of the Stony Brook softball program will be in attendance to witness a ribbon-cutting ceremony by Stony Brook University President Shirley Strum Kenny. Joining Kenny will be the Dean of Physical Education and Athletics Richard Laskowski, Director of Athletics and former coach Sandy Weeden, Business Manager and former coach Judy Christ and first-year head softball coach Megan Bryant. Christ and Weeden, who are former teammates and members of the Long Island Hall of Fame, will toss the ceremonial first pitch.
The Seawolves are enjoying tremendous success in Bryant's first season. A team that won only four games all of last year, SBU is currently 14-12 and has seen several school records fall by the wayside this season. Bryant has won more games in a debut season than any coach in Stony Brook softball history, and one more win will give the Seawolves the most successful season ever.
Saturday's ceremony begins just prior to gametime. The doubleheader begins at noon.
