Softball Splits With Marist In Home Finale

April 26, 2001

Box Score

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook softball team (21-15), playing in its last home doubleheader of the season, posted a split with Marist on Thursday afternoon at Seawolves Field. After falling behind 2-0 in game one, Stony Brook came back to win by a score of 4-3, but Marist dominated game two, winning 5-0.

In game one, Marist (18-21-1) built an early 2-0 lead off Amanda Koldjeski's two-run homer over the left field fence in the first inning. But Stony Brook stormed back, scoring the next three runs to pull ahead 3-2. Stephanie Poetzsch's RBI single plated Sam Foronjy in the second, and Tricia Lipareli crushed a shot that soared over the centerfield fence to drive in two runs in third. The Red Foxes made things interesting with a sacrifice fly that tied the game in the fourth, but Corrine Vish's infield single in the bottom of the inning sent McMurray home for the final 4-3 score.

McMurray, Poetzsch and Tory Menchise each collected two hits to lead the Seawolves at the plate. Stephanie Poetzsch (14-6) picked up the win on the mound, yielding three runs on eight hits, striking out 10 and walking one.

Game two was an entirely different story. After blasting 10 hits in the first game, SBU could manage only three, while the Red Foxes exploded for 14. Michelle Gosh, who was a perfect 4-for-4 in game one, continued her hot hitting as she went 3-for-4 in the nightcap. Jessica Craver's solo homerun in the fifth gave the Red Foxes a 2-0 lead, and they added two more scores in the sixth to cruise to the 5-0 victory.

SBU's Lindsey DeLaRosa (7-9) picked up her second straight loss, giving up two runs on nine hits in four and a third innings.

Even with the split, the Seawolves assured themselves of at least a .500 record, with three doubleheaders remaining. Stony Brook next sees action on Saturday, April 28, when the Seawolves travel to take on St. Peter's at 1 p.m.
