Today's Matchup: Stony Brook faces Rider today in the second home doubleheader this week.
Series History: Today's meeting is the first between the two schools.
SBU Earns Split in Home Opener: The Seawolves pulled off an exciting win against Fairfield and nearly pulled off another in the nightcap as Stony Brook split with the Stags on Tuesday afternoon.
The Seawolves scored two runs in the sixth inning to shut out the Stags, 2-0. In the bottom of the inning, lead-off Cass Broadwater doubled to left field and Corrine Vish followed with a bunt. Two batters later, Jen Milito crushed a double that sent Broadwater home. Third baseman Tory Menchise then drove in Milito, her 13th RBI of the season.
Game two would prove to be another thrilling affair. Unlike game one, Fairfield struck quickly, as a pair of doubles and a single in the second led to three early runs. The Seawolves held Fairfield at bay for the next seven innings and then staged a furious comeback to even the game at 3-3. Milito drove in two runs, including the equalizer, to force extra innings.
Fairfield scored the winning run in the 10th after the tiebreak rule was instituted, and SBU's late rally came up just short with the 4-3 setback.
Play It Again Sam: Junior rightfielder Sam Foronjy had her best outing of the season to date in game two against Fairfield, going 3-for-5 at the plate. Foronjy, the lead-off batter in the pivotal seventh inning, was the first Seawolf to get on base and got SBU going by scoring their first run.
On the year, Foronjy is batting .234 and has four RBI to her credit.
Jenny, Jenny, Who Can I Turn To: With a 9-9 record so far this season, the Seawolves have already shown vast improvement since last year. There is no one that more exemplifies Stony Brook's transformation than junior centerfielder Jen Milito.
Milito collected only 11 hits all of last season, with three RBI and three runs scored. This spring, she has proven time and again to be one of the most solid hitters and fielders on the team.
Through just 18 games, Milito has earned 13 hits, including four doubles. She has scored nine runs and driven in four.
In Tuesday's matchup with Fairfield, Milito was the difference, driving in the winning run in the first game and the tying run in game two.
Patching it Up: Junior Stephanie Poetzsch's shutout win on Tuesday improved her record to 7-3, just two short of equalling the most number of wins in a season by a pitcher in Stony Brook history.
Poetzsch played her first year last spring as a transfer and promptly set new records for strikeouts in both a season and career. Her 119 K's shattered the season mark of 81, and she now has 203 in just a little over one season.
News and Notes: Megan Bryant needs just three more victories to record the most wins in a debut season in Stony Brook history.
