Softball Battles, But Gets Eliminated From ECAC Championships

May 12, 2001

Hanover, NH -- - Stony Brook (21-23) battled hard in its first post season appearance as a Division I program at the ECAC championships Saturday but came up short, losing a pair of one-run games and thus, was eliminated from the tournament. Stony Brook fell to East Carolina, 1-0, in the first game and fell to Columbia, 4-3, in the elimination game.

East Carolina's only run came in the fifth inning, helped by a pair of Seawolves errors. The first two hitters got on as a result of errors and Amanda Manzo singled to bring home what proved to be the winning run. The Seawolves threatened in the second and the fifth but could not plate a runner. Stephanie Poetzsch was stingy in the loss, striking out 10.

In game two, Stony Brook took a 1-0 lead over Columbia on a Lindsey De La Rosa RBI, but Columbia struck back in the second with three runs to take a 3-1 advantage. Shea Carpenter's homerun in the third inning - a two-run shot - tied the game at 3-3. It was her first collegiate homerun.

The game continued after a 90-minute rain delay and was scoreless until the bottom of the seventh. Columbia got the first two runners on against Poetzsch and then April Jarvis singled to bring home the winning run.

Poetzsch suffered both losses on the mound and finishes the season with a 14-12 record.
