Stony Brook, N.Y. - On October 25, 1999, the University at Stony Brook broke ground for its new athletics stadium at a campus ceremony by university administrators, students, government officials, business and community leaders, and representatives from the Nassau/Suffolk building trades. Stony Brook stadium, which will be the home of the University's major men's and women's athletic teams as well as a variety of campus and community events, is expected to open in the Fall, 2002.
The four-level stadium, which will cost an estimated $22 million to build, will have a seating capacity of approximately 8,000, including 500 VIP seats with seat backs and arms, and field turf. The facility will also include modern concession, merchandise and media facilities, and high intensity lighting for night and television events.
"This new stadium will be a great showcase for our intercollegiate athletics program," said President Shirley Strum Kenny. "It will also provide to the campus, and to the community, a venue for a wide range of events as part of our continuing effort to maintain the University's place as the hub for the educational, cultural and community activity in the region."
The construction of the stadium is an essential component of the University's enhancement of the athletics program, which has been upgraded to NCAA Division I status for the first time this year. The football team, men's and women's soccer and lacrosse teams, and the future field hockey team will all play their games at the new stadium. Other anticipated uses for the stadium include Commencement exercises and concerts.
