Men's Soccer Hosts Marist At Seawolves Stadium

Oct. 1, 2002

The Matchup: The Stony Brook men's soccer team faces Marist in a non-conference matchup at Seawolves Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Seawolves (0-8-1) fell to Vermont 2-0 in their America East Conference opener last weekend. The Red Foxes (1-5) picked up their first victory of the season on Sunday, defeating Fordham 2-1.

Series History: The two teams have met only once, with Marist coming away with a 4-1 victory over Stony Brook in 1999.

Stadium Finale: Stony Brook will play in Seawolves Stadium tonight for the final time this year.

So far the Stadium has not been kind to the Seawolves, who have lost their two previous games played there--a 1-0 overtime setback to Adelphi and a 3-1 defeat by Philadelphia.

Scouting the Red Foxes: Marist comes off its first win of the season as the Red Foxes handed Fordham a 2-1 loss last weekend. In that game, freshman Benjamin Castor scored the gamewinner, earning him Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week honors. Castor leads Marist in scoring with three goals on the season.

After opening the season 0-5 and seeing its opponents outscore them 9-1 in its first two games, Marist has improved in the past several outings. The Red Foxes have scored at least two goals in three of their last four games.

Sophomore Mike Valenti has played all 540:00 in the net, allowing 26 goals (4.33) while collecting 36 saves (.581).

Last Time Out: Stony Brook continued to struggle last weekend, falling to Vermont 2-0 in the America East Conference opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon.

After a scoreless first half, UVM's Matt Chavez could not connect on two solid chances in the opening minutes of the second period. But Ethan Hutchins broke on the board with his first goal of the season in the 53rd minute. The Seawolves could not clear the ball after a UVM corner kick and David Said made a nice play to keep the ball in the penalty area. His nice crossing pass found Hutchins wide open at the left post, and he nodded it by SBU goalkeeper Dan Ferrin.

Just 90 seconds later Vermont midfielder Tim Parisi made a big play to keep the 1-0 margin. A Stony Brook corner kick got behind goalkeeper Ryan Corry and Parisi backed him up by adeptly sliding the ball away off of the goal line.

Tony Anderson made it 2-0 in the 75th minute with his team-high third goal of the season. After Chavez was fouled just outside the box, Parisi served a free kick over the SBU defense that Anderson, from five yards out, headed past a diving Ferrin. Ferrin finished with five saves for Stony Brook, while UVM's Corry made five saves in his first career start.

O - For - America East: Stony Brook hopes to continue the string of wins the America East has posted against Marist so far this season.

Albany defeated the Red Foxes 7-1 to open the season, followed by a 2-0 shutout at the hands of Binghamton.

News and Notes: After today, seven of the remaining eight games on the schedule are against Americe East opponents . . . Rider (Oct. 8) is the only non-conference game remaining . . . goalkeeper Dan Ferrin is the only Seawolf to start all nine games.
