Men's Soccer Hosts Boston University In America East Action

Oct. 15, 2002

The Matchup: Stony Brook continues its America East home stretch against Boston University, who currently holds third place in the league standings.

The Seawolves (1-11-1, 0-3) come off their third overtime loss of the season while the Terriers (7-3-2, 2-0) hope to extend their four-game non-losing streak.

Series History: The two teams met for the first time ever last year with BU coming away with a 6-1 victory.

Down 1-0, the Seawolves' Kevin Cameron tied the score in the 29th minute on a pass from Jamie Gaither. From there, it was all Terriers.

BU scored twice in the final 16 minutes of the first half to take a commanding 3-1 lead into the break.

Scores at the 59:30, 74:38 and 87:15 (PK) marks gave the Terriers the convincing 6-1 win.

Here Comes the Rain Again: Not only did Mother Nature wreak havoc with the Seawolves' game last Saturday, but Stony Brook was also forced to make a schedule change for today.

Originally scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start at University Field, today's game was moved to Seawolves Stadium due to the field's unplayable conditions.

Scouting the Terriers: Boston University has not lost in its last four outings as they come off a 1-1 tie with West Virginia. During that span the Terriers have outscored their opponents 9-2.

On the season, BU has allowed just10 goals while scoring 19. Not only that, BU's opponents have managed just 34 shots on the year. Junior midfielder Andrew Dorman, the fourth-leading scorer in the conference, leads the way for BU in the scoring column with four goals and six assists.

Senior goalkeeper Matt Smith has played all 1120 minutes for the Terriers, recording a GAA of just 0.96 which is tops in the league. Smith also has a conference-high five shutouts to his credit and boasts a .862 save percentage.

Something in Common: Stony Brook and BU have faced just one common opponent so far this season--12th-ranked San Diego. The Seawolves had the unfortunate task of facing the Toreros in their first game of the year, and San Diego made them pay with a 5-0 loss.

BU, however, handed USD one of its three setbacks so far this year, earnin a 2-1 victory at home on Oct. 4.

Ferrin Ranked Nationally: Junior goalkeeper Dan Ferrin's 6.69 saves per game ranks him fifth in the country, according to national statistics released by the NCAA Monday.

Ferrin has a total of 87 saves in 13 games. That total is the second-highest of anyone in the top 20.

Seawolves Woes: Stony Brook has been plagued by bad luck all season long, and the ball continued to bounce every way but the Seawolves' last week.

Clinging to a 1-0 lead over Rider last Tuesday, the Broncs scored with just six minutes left to even the game, then managed to score the gamewinner as time expired. On Saturday, the Seawolves' woes in overtime games this season continued, as Northeastern managed to score the gamewinner on a free kick in the 94th minute.

Six of the Seawolves' losses this year have been one-goal decisions, and two of those were last-second defeats. In addition to the Rider loss, Holy Cross scored the gamewinner with just 13 seconds left in overtime in a 2-1 triumph over the Seawolves in early September.

Last Time Out: With both teams battling horrendous weather conditions, Northeastern survived to earn a 2-1 win last weekend.

Playing on a sodden field with a steady downpour throughout the game, the ball traveled unpredictably and both teams had trouble with their footing on the slippery field. The Seawolves got a golden opportunity with nearly 20 minutes left as the referee award Stony Brook a penalty kick. But freshman keeper Sergio Saccoccio came up big, diving to his left to slap sophomore Chris Musinski's shot away.

Ten minutes later, Northeastern took advantage of a 20-yard free kick to go ahead 1-0. But the Seawolves rallied in the final minutes of regulation. With just over four minutes left, the ball bounced around the Northeastern box until it found freshman Payton Webb, whose header slipped past Saccoccio's outstretched arms and into the upper right corner of the net to even the game at 1-1.

A Stony Brook foul again proved to be the Seawolves' demise. Four minutes into overtime, junior Atha Kirkopoulos set up for a free kick 30 yards away from the goal, and he fired the ball past the Seawolves defense and Stony Brook goalkeeper Matt Thibdeau for the gamewinner.

News and Notes: Freshman forward Payton Webb scored his first collegiate goal against Northeastern . . .junior goalkeeper Matt Thibdeau saw his first action of the season against the Huskies, playing all 94:31 and collecting four saves.
