Men's Soccer Hosts Maine On Saturday

Oct. 18, 2002

The Matchup: After Wednesday's game against BU was postponed, Stony Brook gets back on track Saturday against the Maine Black Bears. Both teams are still searching for their first America East victory this season.

The Seawolves (1-11-1, 0-3) dropped their third overtime loss of the season in their last outing, while Maine (1-9-2, 0-5) fell to Northeastern, 1-0, on Wednesday.

Series History: The two teams met for the first time ever last year with Stony Brook capturing a 1-0 overtime victory.

The Seawolves earned their first-ever America East win and ended a three-game skid with the victory.

The game remained scoreless at the end of regulation, but in the 100th minute, Kenyatta Montgomery crossed the ball to Jude Osei Bonsu, who headed it past Maine goalkeeper Mat Cosgriff.

Stony Brook's Dan Ferrin made six saves to register his fourth win and second shutout of the season.

Here Comes the Rain Again: The biggest obstacle for the Seawolves lately hasn't come on the field; last week's bad weather has forced several schedule changes.

Wednesday's game against BU was first moved to Seawolves Stadium due to unplayable conditions on the grass field. Then the game was called off altogether because of Wednesday's storm. The game has been rescheduled for Nov. 5.

The grass field still wasn't ready for today's game, orginally scheduled for 11 a.m. The game was relocated to Seawolves Stadium, but kickoff was moved up to 10 a.m. to avoid interference with Saturday's football game and Homecoming festivities.

Scouting the Black Bears: Like the Seawolves, Maine has struggled in the scoring column this season, recording just nine goals on the year. Maine's only win came in the third game of the year, a 3-0 victory over Division II Assumption College. The Bears have scored just two goals in their last five games.

Senior forward Rob Dow's three goals leads the team. Redshirt sophomore Josh Sjostrom has seen most of the action in the net, allowing 24 goals in 1088:37 (1.54 GAA).

Something in Common: Stony Brook and Maine have faced one common opponent apart from America East action. Rider captured a 2-1 last-second victory over the Seawolves on Oct. 8, while the Broncs settled for a scoreless tie against Maine in September.

Ferrin Ranked Nationally: Junior goalkeeper Dan Ferrin's 6.69 saves per game ranks him fifth in the country, according to national statistics released by the NCAA Monday. Ferrin has a total of 87 saves in 13 games. That total is the second-highest of anyone in the top 20.

Seawolves Woes: Stony Brook has been plagued by bad luck all season long, and the ball continued to bounce every way but the Seawolves' last week.

Clinging to a 1-0 lead over Rider last Tuesday, the Broncs scored with just six minutes left to even the game, then managed to score the gamewinner as time expired.

Last weekend, the Seawolves' woes in overtime games this season continued, as Northeastern managed to score the gamewinner on a free kick in the 94th minute.

Six of the Seawolves' losses this year have been one-goal decisions, and two of those were last-second defeats. In addition to the Rider loss, Holy Cross scored the gamewinner with just 13 seconds left in overtime in a 2-1 triumph over the Seawolves in early September.
