LORETTO, Pa. - Stony Brook senior quarterback Scott Bard threw for 189
yards and two touchdowns to lead the Seawolves to a 24-14 victory over
Saint Francis (0-4, 0-2 NEC) in Northeast Conference football action on
Saturday at the Pine Bowl.
Bard fired scoring scoring strikes to freshman Shon Brownlee (18 yards)
and junior Londre Blocker (17 yards). He finished the game 17-for-33
for 189 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. The Seawolves
other points came on a 23-yard scoring run by junior Ken Lockhart and a
27-yard field goal by junior Mike Soto.
The loss overshadowed an outstanding afternoon for Red Flash junior
tailback Michael Hall, who rushed for a season-high 112 yards on 21
carries. It was Hall's third career 100-yard rushing performance.
Stony Brook (3-1, 2-1 NEC) scored 17 points in the second quarter to
push out to a 17-0 lead at the half before the Red Flash came storming
back. Saint Francis senior strong safety Daunte Neal forced and
recovered a fumble by Bard early in the third quarter, setting the Red
Flash up at the Seawolves' 16-yard line. Five plays later, SFU rookie
quarterback Bo Border plunged across the goalline from a yard out to
trim the Stony Brook lead to 10, 17-7.
On the ensuing possession, Bard again turned the ball over, tossing an
interception to Red Flash freshman linebacker Michael Craig, who raced
25 yards untouched to pull Saint Francis within three, 17-14.
Stony Brook's defense would rise to the occasion, however, limiting the
Red Flash to 197 yards of total offense on the afternoon, to preserve
the victory. The Seawolves scored an insurance touchdown, when Bard
connected with Blocker with 3:51 remaining in the game to set the final.
Lockhart finished the game with 78 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries.
Border, who came on in relief of Red Flash sophomore starter Kevin
McCray, finished the afternoon seven-for-15 for 79 yards and an
interception.
