The Stony Brook women's volleyball team snapped a two-match losing streak with a 3-1 win over the University of Maine (31-29, 30-20, 34-36, 30-24), avenging a loss the Seawolves experienced at the hands of the Black Bears earlier this season. Stony Brook moves to 19-12 overall and 5-5 in the America East, while Maine is now 9-18 on the year and 3-7 in conference play.
As a team, the Seawolves had 68 kills at a .231 hitting percentage, while Maine hit .180 with 62 kills. The Stony Brook serve played a major role in the conference victory, knocking home 11 service aces compared to four from the Black Bear side. Sophomore Julie Zub and junior Rachel Goldsmith had three aces each.
Two Seawolves tallied double-doubles on the afternoon. Sophomore Valerie Maloy killed 14 balls to go along with her team-high 18 digs and Goldsmith's double-double came compliments of her 10 kills and 17 digs. Senior LaToya Byerly killed a team-leading 18 balls and sophomore Danielle MacKnight chipped in with 13 kills of her own to go along with three blocks.
The Seawolves will wrap up the 2002 regular season with two matches at home next week as the team tries to finish strong and claim a spot in the America East conference tournament. Stony Brook currently sits in third position, in front of fourth place Albany. Stony Brook welcomes the Great Danes to the SBU Sports Complex Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday take on Binghamton at 5 p.m.
