Final Stats
Sacramento, CA -- -
Head coach Matt Senk certainly didn't envision his pitching and defense to be carrying the Seawolves in the preseason. But through 11 games, that's been the case more often than not. On Sunday, the Seawolves got solid pitching performances from Kevin Willi and Jamie Szwejkowski to earn a split with Sacramento State Sunday. The Seawolves fell 3-1 in game one but took game two, 7-5.
Kevin Will (3-1) went 7 2/3 innings, but ran out of gas in the eighth inning after allowing just three runs and five hits.
Stony Brook staked Willi to a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on Ed Kull's RBI double that scored Andrew Larsen from second base.
Sacramento scored a run in each of the sixth, seventh and eighth innings and reliever Marshall Plouffe allowed just one Stony Brook hitter to reach base in three innings of relief to preserve the Hornets' victory.
In game two, six of Stony Brook's seven runs came unearned as the Seawolves capitalized on four Sacramento errors. With the game tied at 4-4 and two outs in the ninth, Stony Brook mustered a three-run rally. Andrew Zielinski - who started as the team's designated hitter for the first time this season - collected his second hit of the game by singling to right field. He advanced to second on one of three wild pitches in the inning and came home when Rich Graham reached on an error.
With Graham on second base, Andrew Larsen hit an infield single, advancing Graham to third. Dwayne Whitaker reached on another Hornets' error, Graham scored and Larsen went to third to make it 6-4. A wild pitch ensuued, scoring Larsen from third.
Sacramento got a run in the bottom of the ninth, but Anthony Stutz closeed the game out for his first win of the season (1-0).
Stony Brook built a 4-0 lead with a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings. Matt Devins and Zielinski came home on an infield error to make it 2-0. Devins' two-run double in the fourth made it 4-0.
Sacramento stormed back with two runs in the sixth and tied the game with two outs in the bottom of the eighth on a two-run homerun by Bret LeVier.
The Seawolves received a solid start from Szwejkowski (1-2), who surrendered two runs and five hits in five innings of work.
The Seawolves improved its fielding percentage to .966 by committing just two errors in 54 attemtps in the field and also turned a pair of double plays.
The Seawolves will battle Pacific Monday in a pair of games beginning at 6:00 p.m. (EST).
