Vermont at Stony Brook Game Notes, Saturday, March 30, 1:00 p.m.
Game Backdrop: Stony Brook plays its second straight conferencce matchup, its fourth of the year, as it looks for its third conference win in 2002. Vermont has won two straight coming into today's game which marks the first time that the two teams have ever met.
Last Time Out: Stony Brook dominated Binghamton, 20-3, in a downpour on Tuesday night. Due to unplayable field conditions at Binghamton, the game was moved to SUNY-Oneonta. Kevin Pall scored four times and 10 other Seawolves scored in the contest. Jamey Lacey finished with four assists.
Award Winners: The Seawolves swept the America East weekly awards on Monday. Kevin Pall grabbed Player of the Week honors for totaling nine goals last week, including five against No. 14 Navy.
Freshman Steve Conlon pulled down Rookie of the Week honors for the second straight week after recording seven points in the two games.
Making History: Kevin Pall looks to become the school's all-time leading scorer today. Entering the game, he has 110 career goals which leaves him three shy of breaking Courtney Wilson's (1994-97) mark of 112 goals. Last week, Pall became only the second player in school history to reach the 100-goal plateau. He did so in the win over Lafayette.
Close But . . .:Stony Brook's three losses, two of which have come against Top 20 teams, have all been by one goal. Last Saturday, No. 14 Navy scored the tying goals with two seconds left in regulation. The Seawolves are 1-3 in one-goal games this season.
Doing It With "D": Stony Brook's defense has been a key to the Seawolves knocking on the door of becoming a Top 20 team. Its man-down defense currently ranks 13th in the nation while its team defense ranks ninth, yielding only 7.43 goals per game.
Among The Best: Entering the week, Pall ranked third in the nation in goals per game (3.67) and 14th in points per game (3.86). Through Wednesday's games, he ranked first in the nation in total goals with 26.
Other Seawolves have also found their spot among the nation's best. Denis Scannell (6.67) ranks sixth in ground balls per game and face-off specialist Dennis Nafte is fifth, winning 63.8 percent of his face-offs beginning this week's action.
Lax Facts: Kevin Shea had three goals and an assist versus Binghamton - his first points as a Seawolf . . . Greg Rossi, Erich Hohlman, Sean Quinlan all scored their first collegiate goals against Binghamton . . . Stony Brook received votes in the STX/USILA Top 20 Poll this week . . . SB ranks fourth in the nation in face-off percentage (.634).
Injury Report: Senior attackman Jon Tompkins suffered a torn ACL in his right knee against Navy last Saturday. He is expected to miss the rest of the season.
