Softball Heads To Fairfield For Non-Conference Doubleheader

April 1, 2002

ON DECK: After opening America East Conference play last weekend, the Seawolves face non-conference opponent Fairfield in a doubleheader on Tuesday.

SERIES HISTORY: The Stags lead the all-time series 5-1 and won three of four meetings last season. The Seawolves got their only win last year by a score of 2-0.

ABOUT THE STAGS: Fairfield (14-19) has won just two of its last eight games. Dartmouth swept the Stags on Saturday, winning both games of a doubleheader by a 4-3 final score. Junior Ellen Sarosy leads Fairfield with a batting average of .369 in 111 at-bats. She has 41 hits and six RBI on the season. Senior second baseman Karyn Kennedy (.280 BA) leads the team with 14 RBI and has cranked three homeruns. Pitcher Melissa Santos has made 19 appearances, compiling a record of 11-6. She has pitched 122.1 innings, recording an ERA of just 1.09. She has also struck out 161 batters.

LAST TIME OUT: The Seawolves went 1-3 in the first America East doubleheaders of the season against Albany last weekend. Stony Brook earned a 4-1 win on Saturday for their first conference victory, exploding for three runs in the first inning of game one on Kristen Brust's three-run homer, her third of the year. Stephanie Poetzsch picked up the win on the mound, scattering four hits over seven innings while striking out eight. Brust finished 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI, while Stephanie DiBiase and Colleen McCarthy were both 2-for-4. In game two, Albany raced to a 6-0 lead after three and a half innings. An RBI double to left center by Cass Broadwater allowed the Seawolves to get within 6-5, but Albany held on for its third win in the four-game series. In Friday's games, Stony Brook led 2-1 in game one and Lindsey DeLaRosa pitched eight shutout innings in game two, but the Great Danes captured both wins. In game one, Stephanie DiBiase's RBI single in the third and a Great Danes error in the fourth gave SBU a 2-1 edge. However, a two-run sixth inning led to the 3-2 victory for Albany. Poetzsch picked up the loss, giving up one earned run on six hits while striking out three. Shea Carpenter went 2-for-2 at the plate with a run scored, and Broadwater was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Game two went scoreless for eight innings as both Sarah Maida and the Seawolves' Lindsey DeLaRosa gave solid performances on the mound. In the ninth inning, Lynnette Bohannon's RBI double to left field and Craft's RBI single gave Albany the 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Stony Brook had runners at second and third with just one out but could not manage to score.

OH-MANDA: Sophomore Amanda Staschuk was named Stony Brook Athlete of the Week this week for an impressive performance in eight games last week. On Tuesday against Central Connecticut, Staschuk went 2-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored. She followed that up with an outstanding 4-for-5 effort in a doubleheader with Wagner. She belted homerun for the second straight game and collected an RBI while scoring two runs. Staschuk collected three hits and an RBI in last weekend's doubleheaders with Albany. Her .367 batting average leads the team, while her 18 total hits -- more than double last year's total of eight -- also leads the Seawolves.

THE BAT OF BRUST: Freshman Kristen Brust enjoyed one of her best performances this year in last weekend's 4-1 win over Albany. The first baseman had a three-run homerun in the first inning and later belted a double to help the Seawolves to their only win of the series. Brust, who has started all 19 games, is tied with Amanda Staschuk and Stephanie DiBiase for a team-high 18 hits and eight RBI. Her three homeruns are also a team-high.

CASS IN THE CLUTCH: Junior third baseman Cass Broadwater played a key role in Saturday's doubleheader split with the Great Danes. Broadwater was 2-for-6 with a double and two RBI in the two games combined, and sparked a Seawolves comeback in game two. After falling behind 6-0, Broadwater's RBI double in the sixth inning got the Seawolves to within 6-5.

CARPENTER CONTINUES TO SHINE: Not only has senior Shea Carpenter been outstanding while batting in the cleanup spot in the lineup, the catcher has given a great performance behind the plate as well. In Friday's 2-0 setback, Carpenter played a key role in keeping the Great Danes scoreless for eight innings. On two spectacular plays, she tagged two runners out at home on throws from the outfield. Carpenter also continued her great hitting in that doubleheader as well, going 3-for-6 with a run scored.

DEEBS IN THE LEADOFF: Freshman Stephanie DiBiase has been very reliable for the Seawolves so far this season. The freshman has been hitting very well in the leadoff position in the lineup, and last weekend's games serve as a perfect example. DiBiase collected two hits and scored a run in Friday's doubleheader. In Saturday's games, DiBiase was a stellar 3-for-8 with a double and a run scored.

LOOKING AHEAD: Stony Brook faces another non-conference foe, Fairleigh Dickinson, in a doubleheader at University Field on Thursday before returning to America East action. The Seawolves play host to Boston University on Friday and Saturday. Both doubleheaders are set to begin at noon.
