Stony Brook jumped out to an 8-0 lead and held off a late rally to defeat CW Post in six innings, 10-8, Wednesday afternoon. The Seawolves snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory.
After Andrew Zielinski singled to left to start the seventh for
Stony Brook (9-9), umpires stopped the contest. The game had been held up
for 20 minutes following the first inning due to rain that lingered for the
next few stanzas.
In addition, throwing errors on pickoff attempts by Post (5-17-1) starter
Alper Ulutas led to a pair of early Seawolves' runs. Following the second
Ulutas error in the second, Rob Sandora smacked a two-run single to make it
3-0 in favor of Stony Brook.
In the fourth, a costly error by the Pioneers extended the inning,
with two singles wrapped around a trio of walks leading to three more runs
for the Seawolves.
One inning later, Marc Taormina led off the fifth with a triple and
came home on the front end of a double steal, with Stony Brook adding
another tally on a fielder's choice to make it 8-0.
Post then charged back with five runs in their half of the inning,
managing just two hits.
Stony Brook got back a pair of those runs the following inning, the
first coming on a leadoff home run by Dwayne Whitaker, who finished with a
game-high three hits on the afternoon.
Jonathan Lewis (4-10 went six inning and did not allow a run in gaining his fourth straight win.
Tim O'Sullivan's bases -clearing three-run double in the latter
portion of the sixth reduced the Pioneer deficit to just two runs with just
one out, but the squad was unable to push across any more runs to drop
their seventh straight game.
Sandora added two hits for Stony Brook, while Mike Herbst led Post
with a pair of singles.
